Spoilers
This is supposed to be a female empowerment story right but where in the film does it show that Carol Danvers the individual is powerful and not just Captain Marvel with OP powerset. In the flashbacks we see her attempting things like doing bicycle stunts but falling over, racing a go kart and crashing as a kid when her father scolds her, swinging on ropes in military training and falling down. It never shows us how she overcomes all those challenges. All it shows is her getting zapped by some energy core, developing super powers and becoming OP supergirl. Thats a weak message if they are trying to demonstrate shes a strong female character in a philosophical sense because Carol Danvers the person isnt shown to be good at anything without relying on superpowers. Think about it, if she didn't have super powers, shed just be a regular chick with no redeemable qualities that little girls look upto.
Tony Stark without his suit is an engineering genius with a mind adept at solving problems
Steve Rogers without the serum is a fearless anti-Bully and a strong ethical code
Banner without gamma exposure, like Stark is a scientific genius with a analytical mind
Strange without the mystical power is a expert surgeon with good leadership qualities
And i can go on. Without supergirl powers, what is Carol Danvers good at to which girls can look upto and say shes strong and inspiring?

Excellent points. I definitely don't want to support the flick if it's undermining women's empowerment and sending an anti-feminist message to little girls worldwide.
Kevin Feige should be ashamed of himself. Brie Larson too. Innit?

She gets up everytime she falls down and was an accomplished test pilot with technical skills as well. Sounds like a textbook Mary Sue to me. ETA: basically the MCU's version of Rey. Innit? Only uglier and less likeable.

She gets up everytime she falls down and was an accomplished test pilot with technical skills as well. She gets back up, and suddenly shes a pilot because reasons. The presentation of that progression is severely underdeveloped. What makes her a great pilot with technical skills?

Perseverance and courage are a powerful combination, add some smarts and out-of-the-box thinking and you can go far.

That's not what a Mary Sue is, you're on much firmer ground with Rey. From what you described, Captain Misandrist is worse. Ever met a test pilot? I used to work with them, right out of high school to earn college money. I chuckled when I found out the kitty was named Goose, I was part of that 'Top Gun' generation.
What I described was not uncommon amongst test pilots, even in the Chair Force, which just existed so they could get their tails waxed by Aviators when we detted to Nellis or Eglin for wargames. How they whimpered and whined when the Tomcat got the (then) new GE-110 engines which combined with the Phoenix Charlie we were working on made their precious F-15s little more than targets which couldn't catch us and couldn't run fast enough if the AWG-9 radar locked on and their Bitching Betty told them it was about over for them.
Now had they made her Navy then perhaps you might have better reason to think she was given too many positives, but the sad truth was we really were that damned good. No wonder they would name their pets after Navy Aviators, it was the only way they could ever feel superior to one!
