Big reason why a lot of people are calling Captain Marvel a generic run of the mill comic book movie is because the major tropes in it have been done better in other movies
Student beating mentor - done better in Batman Begins with Bruce/Ras
Getting knocked down, getting back up - done better in Dark Knight Rises
Control your emotions to unlock your full power - done better in Xmen First Class with Magneto
Fish out of water - done better in Wonder Woman and Thor 1
Stopping incoming missles - done better in Xmen First Class
Rediscovering lost memories - done better in Winter Soldier

Better is a really vague word, isn't it? I'm just going to say Brie Larson is a better, more charismatic, well rounded and heroic Superman than Henry Cavill ever was and call it a day.

Does everyone compare genre movies to genre movies? When I see a trope/theme explored I just don't compare it to CBM. I may compare Sci Fi to Sci Fi generally or Horror to Horror, but not as narrow to CBM. Maybe I'm weird. Student Beating the mentor - done better in the Matrix Neo vs Morphius than in Batman Begins Getting Knocked down and getting back up - IE the Heroic Secondwind(altho I would say CM montage is better than DKR) Inigo Montoya did it better than all Control your Emotions - I would posit that instead of controlling her emotions she stopped repressing them because Yon-Rogg wanted her to suppress her abilities and her emotions. Plus having an inhibiting chip on her neck plays a part. So she doesn't control her emotions to power up but to stop controlling them, but if we are going with controlling them for more power was done better in Star Wars. Fish out of Water - Starman, Back to the Future, Big, etc did it better than Thor or WW Stopping Incoming Missiles- This is very specific and so specific I wouldn't even call it a trope. Tropes by definition means it's used a lot. I could go with Neo stopping the bullets but that's a stretch. Same concept on a smaller scale. While I won't call it a Trope I would say First Class scene would be better in stopping the missiles. Rediscovering Lost Memories - Again here I would disagree that Winter Soldiers recovery is better. Just by default having all of her loved ones around her and them reacting with her makes her scene better. More for the actor to play off of. I would say Memento when he remembers that his wife survived the attack was better than WS or CM

Nope, nothing good or charismatic about Brie Larson's performance. Brie Larson's performance was wooden and robotic. And there's no character development or personality to the Carol Danvers / Captain Marvel character. Just another awful MCU movie.

I may compare Sci Fi to Sci Fi generally or Horror to Horror, but not as narrow to CBM. Maybe I'm weird. I think its valid to compare them when there are so many CBM's now, they are bound to repeat the same superhero tropes, and if a movie like Captain Marvel borrows a lot of them then they either have to come up with better versions of established tropes or come up with new subversions to already existing ideas (the latter something Thor Ragnarok did well, even though I didnt like the movie). Well I was sticking within the superhero genre which is why I chose only comic book based movies to compare as theres lot more overlap. The missles thing may look specific but I guess to broaden it out, I would recall it ''1 hero stopping an incoming barrage attack''. Memento is good example of Rediscovering lost memories and I would add Bladerunner 2049 to that too. But I think Winter Soldier did do it better than Cap Marvel, that scene when Bucky and Cap are fighting on the Hellicarrier at the end and Cap is telling him that your name is James Buchanan Barnes and that hes his friend and will not fight him is executed to perfection. Better than the scene in Cap Marvel where she is going through the old photos and rejigging her memory.

Done better when Goku did it. Exactly! Marvel and DC need to stop stealing from Dragon Ball/Z/GT/Super!
