The Protectors would've been a much better name than The Avengers. The Protectors implies fighting to protect innocent people. The Avengers implies fighting for vengeance or revenge. An eye for an eye. A tooth for a tooth.
The Avengers implies a 1920s Chicago gangland-style mentality. Bugs Moran's gang kills 1 of Al Capone's gang so Al Capone's gang retaliates by killing 1 or more of Bugs Moran's gang. An eye for an eye. A tooth for a tooth.

How did he know he was going to assemble a team of superheroes anyway? The Wizard from Alpha Centauri told him. I'm telling you, you have to see this movie!!! As an aside, I'm always bothered by the continued misrepresentation of the Code of Hammurabi. Eye for an eye is a limitation of justice or retaliation, not a call for extremist vengeance. If you were harmed by a person and lost an eye, that person should lose an eye, and no more. i.e., they shouldn't lose an eye, four fingers and all of their earthly possessions. Just an eye. Over the millennia it's been twisted into a threat of vengeance it was never intended to be. I blame the bible.

Uh, Fury never changed his name. He just chooses not to go by his full name; Nicholas Joseph Fury.
Edit: Oh, I thought your OP said Why did Fury change his name.
Well, if you watched the movie like you said you did, you should know why he changed the name of the Protectors to the Avengers.
