Katsura had a bit of excitement last night. She was on her rafter letting Catman pet her while she purred and strutted about as much as a cat can on a rafter. With some verbal encouragement from Catman, she decided to jump down onto the cabinet just below the beam. She immediately realized that someone who looks small and non-threatening while you're looking down from a rafter looks very much different when you're all of the sudden looking up at him.
Catman climbed down from the ladder so she could have the same perspective again, but by the time he was down, Katsura had already hopped down from the cabinet, crossed the defunct microwave oven, and stopped on the whiskey barrel to look back. She decided it was all too much, and she ran to one of her hiding places in a corner behind some old bed slats leaning up against the wall.
Unlike the first day when she pushed her face into the wall so all that showed were her haunches, she turned around to peer out. Catman laid down on the floor and stretched out his hand. She came forward a bit, sniffed his hand, and began rubbing her face on his hand and purring. Then she backed away. So Catman went to his chair and read chapter two from Winnie-the-Pooh. After the reading, Katsura still looked unsure of it all, so Catman let her sniff his hand and rub her face before bidding her good night.
This morning, she was back on her rafter, as purry and flirty as ever. Oh, and the idea for using a flat plate for the canned food was a bust, but she did eat a lot of the dry food during the night.

I've never met a cat that turned it's nose up at canned food. Aside from her pucky appetite, it sounds like she's settling right in.
Tigger used to exfoliate my face too, lol. He was like a dog that way. He kissed like a dog.

Since Katsura completely bypassed the veterinarian's protocol for accepting the food Catman provides, he took all that food down to the shelter yesterday morning. He also took a can of the puree food for syringe feeding. They were happy to get it, and in return, they gave Catman three cans of various flavors Katsura had favored while at the shelter.
An interesting side note: The other cats Catman was seriously considering have all been adopted with the exception of Boss who was in the hospital. A few other cats Catman had taken note of were also adopted. Boss has recovered and is up for adoption again, and with his charm (and lovely blue eyes), he's likely to find a home quickly.
The shelter folks were amused that Catman has to stand on a ladder to pet Katsura. But she seems to be seriously considering hopping down onto the cabinet again. Perhaps one of her favorite foods will provided the extra incentive she needs.
As for Miko, she continues her efforts to become Catman's nighttime cuddle buddy. She got the position next to Catman's chest correct last night, though she didn't do the pre-cuddle ritual Andrew performed every night. Then again, she didn't get annoyed when Catman left his hand on her like Andrew did. Early in the morning, she decided she wanted Catman's pillow, but Catman was able to keep her from a full takeover, and she left after a while.
When Catman got up in the morning, he found Miko asleep on his slippers.

My one cat likes to sleep on your head. I'd wake up to an almost 20 pound cat hat, lol. He's snooty towards to dogs though, so doesn't bother much now.

Katsura was quite pleased with the food from the shelter and ate it all. Even Miko liked it.
This evening she ventured outside her comfort zone and jumped down onto the cabinet to be petted. Nice to not need to balance on a ladder to reach her. She's not quite ready to be a lap cat, but she's making excellent progress from that terrified kitty of last week.
Miko has also been working on her nighttime cuddling technique. She made up a bit of a ritual to go through which involved a lot of rubbing her face against Catman's hand while purring. She still wanted to steal his pillow in the early morning and ended up sleeping on Catman's slippers again.
Katsura has one rather strange habit. She takes hold of Catman's hand with her paw (claws sheathed fortunately) and puts one of his fingers into her mouth. She makes no effort to bite and releases the finger after a moment.

Catman she's checking to see if you are ripe enough to eat and apparently the decision is "not quite ready yet ! "

A tip from the Crazy Cat Lady - get that girl some Gerber's chicken baby food! Offer some on the end of your finger, but if she is reluctant, schmear her muzzle with it. She will have to lick it off, and might find that she likes it! If not, schmear her again! Schmear, lick, repeat, until she will eat it out of a spoon or dish. It has enough fluid in it so she won't dehydrate, and many a reluctant kitty has been coaxed to eat with this procedure. What Sulla said about the can opener sound - once you get your girl to eat the baby food, the 'thuck' sound of opening the jar will create instant interest! That's how I find hiding cats, but it can create a stampede at my house. In my household, I find that shaking a plastic can of Tender Vittles has the desired effect. Instant cat stampede.

This evening, Katsura graduated from cabinet kitty to whiskey barrel kitty. She sat on the whiskey barrel a good ten minutes for purring and petting as Catman sat in a chair. She was still easily startled (such as when she knocked a scratch pad off or when Catman moved unexpectedly), but she calmed down quickly each time. And this time when Catman left the room, she sat on the cabinet instead of retreating into the rafters. Catman finally managed to get a couple more pictures of her this morning. Not great photography by any stretch of the imagination, but they do give a better view of what she looks like.

She's lovely, Catman, and soon she will be a snuggler, too! I'm so glad she is eating now; those shelter people know their kitties!

That was eventful.
After letting Catman pet her while she lounged on the whiskey barrel for about ten minutes, Katsura decided she would explore the unknown world of the unfinished basement that lies beyond the back door to her room. She only managed a few minutes before getting spooked and racing back into her room. Catman hadn't moved from the chair by the whiskey barrel, but that sight also frightened her. She thought about hiding back behind the bed slats, but changed her mind, hopped up onto the whiskey barrel and made her way across the cabinets to her rafter. After she'd calmed down, Catman went over and let her play with his hand for a couple minutes.
When he brought her the evening bowl of canned food, she had fully recovered from her adventure.

Today Katsura discovered how to get up on the rafter on the other side of the room. This leads to an even better hiding place. Of course, a hiding place isn't worth much if you come out and purr loudly when called. Still, one must admire her ingenuity.

She taps me, runs like heck and hides. Then she meows and sticks a paw out to wave from her hiding spot.

Today Katsura decided she likes the floor ... mostly. Things like Catman sneezing or moving still startle her, but she recovers quickly and does not retreat to the rafters.
She seems genuinely surprised that people have bodies below the waist. Considering her background, that makes sense. Her experience in the shelter, while generally positive, has not included seeing people while standing on the floor. Connecting the lower body to the upper has taken her some time, but this morning, she rubbed her face on Catman's slipper after giving it a sniff. She's still a bit scared of Catman standing, but she's making great progress.
As for Miko, she's experimenting in the fine art of hiding in plain sight. Catman will not see her blending into the furniture and calls her name. She sits still until he realizes she's been in view the entire time, and when she sees he's finally 'found' her, she laughs at him.
Still getting the nighttime snuggle routine worked out, but it's better.
