Mercedes McCambridge was born on this day in 1916 in Joliet, Illinois. She won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her film debut, All the King's Men (1949). She had been a very successful radio performer before ever switching to film. She tended towards roles that were manly and tough. She appeared in Giant (1956), Touch of Evil (1958) and A Farewell To Arms (1957). In Johnny Guitar (1954), she appeared with Joan Crawford, with whom she notoriously did not get along with. Possibly NOT (It's most likely costar Ruth Roman) Mercedes McCambridge in the noirish Lightning Strikes Twice (1951) Johnny Guitar (1954) Probably the one role she is most famous for was her voice of the demon Pazuzu in The Exorcist (1973). Her bronchitis that she'd had most of her life was able to provide the necessary sinister vocal quality needed by director William Friedkin. She was not credited for the work she did on the movie and appeal by her to the Screen Actors Guild rectified this matter, and a new print of the film was made with her name in the credits. She continued to act occasionally for many years in TV and movies until her death from natural causes in 2004. All of the Mercedes McCambridge movies I've seen, so far: All the King's Men Johnny Guitar Giant Touch of Evil The Exorcist The Concorde: Airport '79

JOHNNY GUITAR a huge favourite chez timshel - recent revisit a fortnight ago - she makes a wonderful villainess - a lynch happy bundle of conflicted sexuality.
SUDDENLY LAST SUMMER is a treat too, with "Mercy" yielding nothing to both Liz and Kate at full throttle.
And her sinister turn in TOUCH OF EVIL could be my favourite unbilled cameo.
Camp Classic - in AIRPORT 80 (as it was on UK release) she got to play a Russian gymnastic coach scared her prodigy is falling for a capitalist romeo!
Jess Franco's 99 WOMEN hardly less so - as sadistic warden running X rated prison with Herbert Lom (porno version available - not with her disrobing I should add!)
ANGEL BABY is a good one
She's formidable in GIANT
LIGHTNING STRIKES TWICE OK - Are you sure the picture above is not Ruth Roman? If not I have to say Mercedes is having a very glamorous day!
Would anyone recommend INSIDE STRAIGHT or LIKE A CROW ON A JUNEBUG??? - which have eluded me so far but I'm curious about.

I'm not sure, now that you mention it. The internet told me it was her, but now I think it may have lied to me! I've never seen Lightning Strikes Twice (1951) so I can't say for sure. Found this photo of Ruth Roman though... Ruth Roman is another husky voiced, dark-haired actresss, so they could maybe be easily confused. I found this photo of them together in Lightning Strikes Twice and neither one looks like that photo I originally posted! What the...?

My dad refers to Ruth as " a big strong girl" (that is a recommendation). Others in this category include Rhonda Fleming and Sophia Loren. He never referred to Mercedes this way....

I think so! Anna Faris is no Mercedes McCambridge though! I'd forgotten that Emma Stone was in that!

Mercedes McCambridge, together with Mr Benz she invented a luxory car! Voice of the Devil. The Concorde... Airport '79 1979, unlike bigger stars like Alain Delon, Martha Raye and Charro, she survived this mess.

I thought Mercedes McCambridge's work in Lightning Strikes Twice was excellent--especially her scenes with Darryl Hickman, who was also excellent in the role of her disabled brother.

The Concorde... Airport '79 1979, unlike bigger stars like Alain Delon, Martha Raye and Charro, she survived this mess. Leonard Maltin's classic review of The Concorde...Airport '79: "Robert Wagner is a brilliant scientist, George Kennedy and Bibi Andersson make love by the fire, John Davidson's hair stays in place when the plane turns upside down, and Mercedes McCambridge is a Russian gymnastics coach. Thank goodness Charro is around for credibility." Naturally, he gave it a BOMB rating.

I need to watch All the Kings Men to see if she chews the scenery as excessively as she did in Johnny Guitar and in Giant.
She does her part in making Johnny Guitar one of the worst "western" films ever. (imo) Have not decided who is more obnoxious .. Mercedes or Joan.
It's not really their fault as they didn't write the script or direct the movie BUT they could have said "NO WAY" when offered these ludicrous roles.

To me, Johnny Guitar is the worst film ever made that can lay claim to being a respectable film. Plan 9 From Outer Space was simply a cheaply made film. Not so of Johnny Guitar. It had a respected director, cast, and studio money.

That prison movie with Herbert Lom has me curious although Jess Franco's direction makes me sick. Well it is unlikely to convert you to being a Franco fan. There really is an X rated version - with hard core sex scenes with obviously different performers more or less randomly inserted into the "plot" of 99 WOMEN(Maria Schell sent to reform the prison as inmates Maria Rohm and Co escape in the jungle). There is also a feeble attempt to add another marquee name by inserting shots of Bondgirl Luciana Paluzzi from another movie into the film (and linking them with new shots of someone pretending to be Paluzzi but obscuring her face with a red wig or turning away from camera). Franco did something similar a bit earlier with another Bondgirl - Shirley Eaton, - weaving outtakes of her from one of the SUMURU movies he directed into a FU MANCHU film and giving her "guest star" status in the latter. Eaton was more than a little vexed by this underhand way of obtaining her services without payment and retired shortly afterwards
Paluzzi
This is the porn version if you decide to track it down -or there is a non porn R2 version available.
Mercedes inspecting her charges.
I can't honestly say it is a good movie but if you collect chicks in chains movies you should probably give it a go. It was a big hit (topped BO in New York on opening I think)
There was a remake mooted in early 80s (Susannah York, Oliver Reed & Jill St John since you ask.... but I don't think it was made.... I'm hoping Jill was taking the Mercedes part!)
