Any fans of the "Van Halen II" album by Van Halen? Can you believe it's now 40 years old? You can't imagine the undertaking Van Halen went through to follow-up their groundbreaking first album in only one year. But with a pretty solid set of songs, the group just did that with Van Halen II. While not a masterpiece like the first album, it's still a pretty solid follow-up and showed that Van Halen had the chops to stay for the long run. People mainly remember this album for songs like "Dance The Night Away" and "Beautiful Girls", but the album tracks really give the album some meat like "Women in Love", "Somebody Call Me a Doctor", Light Up The Sky" and "D.O.A.". The band members are once again in top form with Eddie Van Halen and David Lee Roth showing just how good of a guitar player (Spanish Fly for example) and front man they ended up becoming. That's not to discredit Alex Van Halen and Michael Anthony who have their moments to shine on the album. I'd probably have this album in the top 3 Van Halen albums of not only the David Lee Roth era, but also of the entire band's career.

Great album, but you should have linked Outta Love Again. Or DOA. Or Somebody Get Me a Doctor. Or even Women in Love. Basically any song other than those two. lol
What are the other two in your top three?

Basically any song other than those two. lol What are the other two in your top three? Well I wanted to pick the songs people were most familiar with in case someone doesn't own the album. If someone is curious about the album, they can first hear the songs people first heard when it came out. I like those songs and the songs you mentioned along with Light Up The Sky.
Probably Van Halen I and 1984. I don't count Diver Down since that's not really an album. Women and Children First is good although not a classic like I and II or even 1984. I like Fair Warning, but it's my least favorite of the Roth albums.

I own all the Roth albums, except "Fair Warning", on vinyl. "Van Halen I" is the only one I rebought on CD. You obviously have a higher opinion of "1984" than I do. I prefer "VH II", "Women and Children First", even "Diver Down" to "1984". As far as I'm concerned, "Panama" is the only good song on "1984".

Eddie was in top form for that album. Turn up the volume during the fade-out on One Foot Out the Door. Also, this: As far as I'm concerned, "Panama" is the only good song on "1984". Drop Dead Legs > Panama

Also, this: At least half of the songs are covers instead of original tracks and it's only about 30 minutes. Cover albums, or albums that mostly contain covers, aren't really considered by many to be an official release. It's just a band having fun and pumping something out for themselves and fans to enjoy. I wouldn't consider Undisputed Attitude by Slayer to be an official Slayer album since that contains all covers.
I agree that Eddie is in top form on that album. That album has some of his most ferocious playing.

But every one of the first six releases (ie, the "Roth era") are around 30 minutes long. As a matter of fact, Diver Down is about 15 seconds longer than Fair Warning. Only 5 of the 12 tracks are covers, and I don't count Happy Trails since it's just a silly 1 minute tune added to the end of it. I guess if you take all the covers out, you could say it's an EP. Nonetheless, Diver Down is a great record. Maybe you're just not listening to it right:
