Apart from the performances of the Home countries, there were a few other interesting results.
Belgium and France kept up their good form with wins over Russia and Moldova, respectively.
Joachim Low rang a few more changes in Germany's team but only managed a draw with Serbia in Wolfsburg. He has opted to go for youth instead of experience but his kinder were denied by an exceptional Serb keeper.
The Netherlands, now managed by ex Everton boss Ronald Koeman gave more evidence of the renaissance of Dutch football with a comprehensive 4-0 drubbing of Belarus. This follows Ajax' dumping of Real Madrid out of the CL. The team is now captained by Liverpool's favourite for EPL Player of the Year, Virgil Van Dijk. The exotically-named Memphis Depay was apparently, the star.
That 50/60s haven for star DJs, Luxembourg also won, beating Lithuania 2-1 after being behind. Another "match of the minnows" saw Cyprus beat San Marino 5-0
In a match billed as the China Cup, Thailand beat the hosts (China) 1-0
Perhaps the biggest news/result of the week was the defeat of the Messi-led Argentines by Venezuela, 3-1, in a match played in Madrid. The "wee magician" returned to international football after missing the last half-a-dozen matches but seems unable to turn it on for the country of his birth. My own theory is that having left for Barca when he was eight-years-old, he probably feels no more Argentine than I do.
