I consider them co-leads. Hopkins is definitely lead, but I couldn't remember if Gibson was too. My supporting actor lineup for this year sucks though, so I threw him in there.

I consider Mel Gibson the definite lead of the Bounty. Hopkins would either be co-lead or supporting in my mind.
movieman, it's your thread, so I'll leave it up you if you want to exclude my vote of Hopkins or not. I have no problem with it either way.

Not a problem. I thought about it some more, and I guess co-lead would be the most accurate. You can exclude Hopkins, which will work since that will reduce the number of actors I listed to 10. (I greedily listed 11.) By the way, it's great to see Birdy and The Flamingo Kid get some love (even if it's just for performances). I don't think a lot of people have seen those movies.

I think both are decent movies too.

I think Ngor is lead (I notice that you consider Ed Harris lead in The Right Stuff... to support my case, The Killing Fields is absolutely Dith Pran's story whereas The Right Stuff is not at all John Glenn's story). I actually think that the Academy's placement of Ngor as supporting is one of the more insulting category fraud cases - you are an Asian, non-professional newcomer and there is a better-known American in the other principal role, so you are in support even though the film is about you! But anyway... this will be tough, dreadful year! - but here goes... - M. Emmet Walsh, Blood Simple
- Jeffrey Jones, Amadeus
- Adolph Caesar, A Soldier's Story
- James Woods, Once Upon a Time in America
- James Fox, A Passage to India
- Hoyt Axton, Gremlins
- Richard Crenna, The Flamingo Kid
- John Malkovich, Places in the Heart
- Gary Oldman, Meantime
- Hunter Carson, Paris, Texas

You are probably right about Haing S. Ngor, but I haven't seen the movie in 15 years. Keep in mind that many of the movies these performances are from I haven't seen in a very long time. He is staying where he is though, mostly so I can make room for more picks in the lead category. It's one of my favorite years for lead actor performances. I disagree that 1984 was a dreadful year for supporting actor performances. It isn't a very strong year for the movies, but it is for performances imo.
