"Rooters" - is that a word that is still in common use today, or was it taken from a 1906 article that accompanied the photo? I don't think I've ever heard it with this meaning - but then English is not my mother tongue.

Root means something else entirely in Australia!

I am almost 100% sure that that was not the type of rooting that the 19,000 people were doing at the baseball stadium!
There's a Canadian clothing brand called Roots which I think sponsors the Canadian Olympic teams and supplies them with the street clothes they use during the games. I remember this being an endless source of amusement for Australians - maybe during the Sydney Olympics?

Baseball fans used to be called "cranks" back in the day.

Imagine sitting with NO 'cover' out in the stands (for not ONE, but TWO FULL GAMES!), in the direct noonday sun, on what I'm guessing was a pretty HOT 4th of July Philly day, either as a guy, in a DARK, full (3-piece) suit, or as a woman, in your heavy, full-length dress (with additional layers underneath!!) !! Unless you were a little kid that day, I'm guessing you couldn't get away with wearing shorts, or ANY lighter/shorter clothing for that matter !! THEN: Early 1900s: Fans watch an Indians game at Recreation Park, which was built by the Graves brothers and featured Spokaneβs first grass baseball infield.NOW: Spokane Indians fans settle in before the start of the game with the Yakima Bears on July 27, 2012, at Avista Stadium.www.spokesman.com/stories/2012/aug/06/ol-ball-game/SAVE FERRIS

Sat right behind home. July sun. Almost killed me! David Ross hit a homer off madbum for the win for the braves.

Buy me some crackerjacks! I don't care if I ever get back.
Neither of the songwriters ever seen a baseball game before they wrote the song.
