A young child and his grandfather had to be rescued from a 6-foot deep drainage ditch after the child fell in and the older man jumped in to save him, authorities said.
The 5-year-old boy fell through a drainage grate over a 6-foot ditch outside a building in the 400 block of West Briar Place in the Lakeview neighborhood just before 5 p.m., Chicago police and fire officials said.
The boy suffered a puncture wound to his abdomen during the fall and his grandfather jumped in to help but became trapped himself, authorities said.
Both police and fire officials responded to the scene and assisted in helping pull the pair to safety.
The boy was taken to Lurie’s Children’s Hospital in serious-to-critical condition, but his condition later stabilized, authorities said.
