"Manos: The Hands of Fate" was actually made by a manure salesmen on a bet that he couldn't produce a horror film. I guess he "won" the bet.

It's been discussed many, many, times, but Apocalypse Now had to have been one of the most stressful and traumatic productions in the past 50 years. Besides the fact that Martin Sheen had a heart attack you had Coppola attempting suicide (or at least contemplating it) ![](https://s3.amazonaws.com/pbblogassets/uploads/2016/03/francis-ford-coppola-gun.png)

The production of the first Evil Dead film from raising the movie, shooting in an actual abandoned cabin and the troubles it included, to distribution. Bruce Campbell’s autobiography goes into good detail.

The Abyss. One of the hardest movie shoots ever. Even Jim Cameron, known for his tough and demanding directing style, said "I knew this was going to be a hard shoot, but even I had no idea just how hard. I don't ever want to go through this again".

Heaven’s Gate. The documentary is on YouTube and certainly worth a watch. It’s at least shorter.

"The Thief and the Cobbler" was a 30 year mess (Vincent Price even died during the production from the length it took to make)

Wasn't Disney's "Robin Hood" just recycled animation from the "The Jungle book" and other Disney films?

The documentary on Apocalypse Now was more memorable than the movie.
James Cameron had a big fight with Gale Anne Hurd while making the Abyss. Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio was mad at Cameron for on set abuses she and Ed Harris had to endure.
HORROR EXPRESS 1972 only was made to re-use a train model that had been built for a western. Peter Cushing didn't want to do it because he was mourning his wife and Christopher Lee managed to change his mind by cheering him up in the production office.
LISA AND THE DEVIL/HOUSE OF EXORCISM --the producer got permission to shoot inside a 747 (allegedly the first movie to be able to do that) so they changed the ending of the movie. While they were away filming in the plane, a landslide hit their studio headquarters-caving in the roof. If they had been there, likely some would have died. The director Mario Bava hated nudity and tried to talk Elke Sommer out of doing the partial nude scenes. He refused to be in the room when the nude scenes were shot so he would set up the camera and walk out until the shots were finished. It was previewed at Cannes and Samuel Arkoff told the producer he would never be able to sell it--which proved to be correct. The film was impossible to sell as it was made so the producer changed it into a straight exploitation film (shooting new scenes with Sommer swearing up a storm and spitting frogs). It was also responsible for Kojak's lollipop. In the movie, Telly Savalas sucks on lollipops and when Arkoff saw it-and met Savalas on a street later, he told him that he looked ridiculous with the lollipop so Savalas wanted to prove he could make a lollipop look respectable so that's why (after the pilot) Kojak has a lollipop.

Speaking of Cameron, didn't Linda Hamilton break her leg during Terminator or something and it delayed production?

"The Thief and the Cobbler" was a 30 year mess (Vincent Price even died during the production from the length it took to make) That is some movie history! I read about all the twists and turns. Imagine the disappointment to have worked on the film for decades only to have it turned over to Harvey Weinstein and then finished in cheapo fashion. Last I heard someone wanted to restore the original vision but the animator Williams was so upset about it-he wanted nothing to do with the restoration (maybe he changed his mind?). I think the lesson there is Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance.

I know she almost got set on fire when the truck explodes and she jumps into the dumpster.
Predator had an interesting production especially when they had to shut it down for a year to have the creature re-designed.

"Cool World" was originally supposed to be about a half human/half cartoon maniac, but the producers forced Bashiki to make it more kid friendly to capitalize on "Who Framed Roger Rabbit". It turned into a messed and Bashki hasn't done a film since.

Eye Of the Beholder (1999)
The production was an absolute nightmare. They even made a documentary about it.
The two leads Ewan McGregor and Ashley Judd didn't get along at all. Judd chose to remain in character during the whole shoot which McGregor found really bewildering.
The shoot took such a toll on director Stephan Elliot that he checked himself into a mental sanatorium once the movie had wrapped.
Babylon A.D.
The studio heavily interfered with he production and the director Mathieu Kassovitz and lead actor Vin Diesel despised each other. There were rumours at the time that Kassovitz even had a mental breakdown on set. He later released a documentary called Fucking Kassovitz covering the production.
