I saw him in a lot of British productions and always presumed he was an American ex-pat doing character roles for that market. I see now he was Canadian.

Sorry to hear of this. Jeez, he was in everything, from Dr. Strangelove, to Secret Agent, and miniseries soapers like Mistral's Daughter. Always a solid character presence, and suprisingly capable of comedy when it was required. I'm a little amazed at his age, maybe because he looked a bit older than what his actual years would have been at the height of his career--89 is a ripe old span of years, but I'd have though he might have been well into his nineties.
