If only. Then I'd have had a chance to win my bracket.

have you been to a duke game? he does most of his carping during tv timeouts. he knows how to maintain his image. i was at this #15 belmont almost upset of #2 seed duke: and he spent more time during those tv timeouts bitching at refs than coaching. www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/game?gameId=284000043Carping? Like Calipari, Boeheim, Williams, Thompson, Knight, Dean, Tarkanian, Richardson, Donovan, Lewis, nearly ever college coach I've ever seen. I'm trying to think of coaches who don't piss and moan. Lute Olson I think was known for it. Wooden probably didn't need to. I'm out.
yeah, i know. i'm not saying you're wrong. but he's not like some saint!

yeah, i know. i'm not saying you're wrong. but he's not like some saint! No one said he was. He can be smug. I've heard his recruiting can be somewhat heavy handed. His fights with Dean Smith were childish at times. I'm still amazed that his players (back in the day when they stayed) could make grades at Duke. Duke isn't exactly Saint Alphonso's Community College as far as academics. I'd bet some of his image is self promoted, it has to be a plus at recruiting time.
Did you ever read John Feinstein's The Legends Club? The careers of Krzyzewski, Dean Smith and Jim Valvano. Good stuff.

yeah, i know. i'm not saying you're wrong. but he's not like some saint! What cracks me up about college coaches is how 97% of them are Bobby Knight knockoffs. If you're a Coach K or an Izzo I can respect that. Their record speaks for itself. It's the guys at Larry University who end up going 17-15 and losing in the first four that make me shake my head. So much of that yelling is grandstanding for fans and boosters. "Look at me coach! I'm working the officials! I'm giving it 110%! Please renew my contract!" Meanwhile the team would have an identical record if the mascot was coaching the team.

Meanwhile the team would have an identical record if the mascot was coaching the team. Before the 80's, very few coaches were household names, let alone media icons. John Wooden, for his success. Al McGuire, for his personality. Bobby Knight, for his antics. But other successful coaches were unknowns. Johnny Orr, Ray Meyer, Jud Heathcoat, Denny Crum, Joe B. Hall. TV changed that. Cameras were pointed more toward Rollie Massamino than any of his players. Watch UNLV play and you got 10,000 shots of Tarkanian gnawing on his towel. Talk about NC State and all you heard about was Valvano's sound bites. The Big East coaches especially. Lucky Lou, Bug Jawn Thompson, Boeheim, Rick Pitino, even wallpaper like Jim Calhoun. I think they played to the cameras. Do doubt they played up to the camera. And, like I said, it didn't hurt come recruiting time.

great point! i forget but in one high school district they make the coach sit during the action. or maybe they should do it like kansas where you just see the backs of coaches....the bench. Coaches are constantly outside of the coaching box or on the floor. Players too. I seen three or four times when Calipari and Bruce Pearl wer on the floor both while the game was being played. The NCAA should crack own on this for the next season. There will come a time where a coach in in the way and it will affect game play at a crucial time. Yeh, technicals will be issued but you don't want to see a game end that way.
