Theists: What's your opinion of these well known religious figures, past and present (feel free to add to this list):
Jimmy Swaggart, Robert Tilton, Kenneth Copeland, Creflo Dollar, Jesse DuPlantis, Billy Graham, Jim Bakker, Jerry Falwell, Mike Murdock, Peter Popoff
These are just a few of the ones off the top of my head. Personally, I think they are/were scum of the earth who pray/prayed on the desperate and gullible. "If you give the Lord (i.e. ME) money, the Lord will return it to you ten fold". Many of these televangelists have their own private jets. Kenneth Copeland has his own airport. In an online Youtube video, Kenneth and Jesse Duplantis are telling how "necessary" a private jet has become. Kenneth called a commercial airline, "A long tube with a bunch of demons." What an arrogant asshole.

I don't know what is worse - these false prophets or the people who follow them.

I'm not a theist, and the only name I recognise is Jerry Falwell. So I'd say these characters are not "well-known".

Are they tele-evangelists?
Pledge money to my holy crusade to buy me a massive house in LA and you will be saved merchants?
Otherwise known as conmen.

I think Jim Bakker started out as the real thing but got corrupted.

I'm not a theist, and the only name I recognise is Jerry Falwell. So I'd say these characters are not "well-known". You must lead a sheltered life, or I watch too much television. Do you receive DayStar television or the SonLife Broadcast Network? What about the paid, religious advertising at 4am on many television stations. When scanning through the stations, I'll stop on one of these networks and laugh at the BS they're selling.
Among other things, Creflo Dollar asks his parishioners for fifty-four million dollars for a private jet in this video.
Or
Peter Popoff declared bankruptcy after this broadcast. Popoff has since resurfaced with his miracle spring water shtick. Even though many of these con-men have been exposed, they continue to dupe the gullible and desperate to part with what few dollars they have.

I don't remember if I ever watched TV at 4am. I have not seen TV in years. Sadly those wackos are now getting into internet world too but I am happy that we have so much more power to control what we see on internet as compared to what we could see on TV (especially in those days when we had very few alternatives and sometimes had to share it with others). Internet is so many times better in my view.

Billy Graham met with every American president since Truman and had a close friendship with Queen Elizabeth II. He's the only one of the bunch that I think might have been sincere. Incidentally his son Franklin has turned out to be as big a scumbag as the rest of them.

I've heard of Peter Popoff and Robert Tilton but can't remember ever seeing them. Not familiar with Creflo Dollar or Mike Murdock.

He was also very ecumenical with Christians in general, & not judgemental on Christians that did not belong to the same denominations (Baptist & Presbyterian) as him. As someone already noted, he knew Queen Elizabeth II (who is the Defender of the Anglican Faith), & he even knew St. Pope John Paul II, as well.

I'm not a theist, and the only name I recognise is Jerry Falwell. So I'd say these characters are not "well-known". They pay for their programs to be on television. You might not get their broadcasts where you live. It's like other paid advertising, it only goes as far as it has been paid to go. They have some of their own broadcast stations and networks that provide some content like TBN and Daystar. Your area might not have any of those.

I liked Kenneth Copeland's message before too, but he's gone too "prosperity preacher" lately without any other substance.

I read this book years ago, and Templeton discussed Graham at length, how Graham made a conscious choice to ignore the issues that Templeton was considering. He felt that Graham was sincere, one of the 'true believers', but Templeton could not share that faith. It is an interesting read. But, yes, the others are all in it for the Almighty Dollar.

Some of them are mere soldiers and some of them are generals, but I suspect they all start out as mere soldiers. Some never develop very far. Some show remarkable wisdom at a young age. Perhaps you've met young people with wisdom beyond their years who took other walks in life.

I hadn't heard of him, either - I think he left evangelism about the time I was born. But my parents were very much into Billy Graham.
