Janis Ian - Between The LinesReleased in March of 1975 this album, and it's ICONIC song, "At Seventeen", struck an immediate chord with thousands of high schoolers like me, who were literally 'At (or about) Seventeen' !! And though this song may not have changed anybody's actual situation, just hearing those beautiful, knowing lyrics, somehow let us know that there were plenty of others struggling with the MANY indignities that the 'awkward years' seemed to relish heaping on us, and DEFINITELY helped ease the pain of those times, and the hard, often bitter little "truths" that we learned.......At Seventeen !! SAVE FERRIS

I have a couple of her albums, but I wouldn't say I was a huge fan. She's a pretty good singer and songwriter, but her music can be a tad pedestrian, and she lacks the bite of Dory Previn, who probably occupies the top spot of my all-important "favourite female singer/songwriter who isn't Kate Bush" list. She also is a writer of science fiction novels, not a lot of people know that. The woman I can never understand the glorification of is Joni Mitchell, really grates on me her voice. Give me Rose McDowell any day.

She also is a writer of science fiction novels, not a lot of people know that. The woman I can never understand the glorification of is Joni Mitchell, really grates on me her voice. Give me Rose McDowell any day. Given that I haven't read a science fiction novel (unless you count Keith Roberts' Pavane) since the year the blessed Margaret seized power in a (metaphorical) bierkeller, I wasn't very likely to know that, and therefore didn't. I find Joni Mitchell too dull to have a strong opinion on. I've tried with Rose McDowell, but failed. I thought I might like Cut With The Cake Knife, but really didn't. She's had her moments with C93 though, and I also really like this, in cahoots with Jill - - which you may not have heard before, as I suspect the Pastels are probably not your thing. That's rather pleasant isn't it, have you checked out her band "Sorrow" and the album "Let There Be Thorns"? I love that one. She's done some nice stuff with Nature And Organisation (Michael Cashmore) too.
