henri verneuil made many great french commercial heist films during his career. this is my third film by this great man who has been accused of being a hack. the earlier ones - THE SICILIAN CLAN and LE CASSE/THE BURGLARS were great entertainment. this one starts off well with JEAN GABIN just out of jail, scandalized by gentrification and all the squares around him. he agrees to rob a casino and hires ALAIN DELON (a good for nothing young man constantly heckled by his mother) and DELON's brother in law. the film features a really long heist scene with very little dialog that might have been ripped off from RIFIFFI. it is a very entertaining film all around and this kind of silent heist scene might have been thrilling to watch on the big screen back in the day. there are some beautiful girls and nice luxurious locales thrown in. despite all the talk of squares and badassness, it is sort of a light hearted film with a funny ending.
(7.5/10)
