People forget shock humor was a thing in most of the 1990's and pretty much the first decade of the new century, South Park was HUGE and it went all kinds of places that left critics, analysts, and the squeaky clean TV viewer grossed out and hard to shake from the noggin for the rest of the week(Heck, the movie was titled "Bigger, Longer, and Uncut" for crying out loud)(*Also, yes, I know South Park is still on and still pretty popular but its not as popular or as talked about as it used to be when it first started). What was once a niche market grew more mainstream and everybody was trying to play the game and be controversial regardless if they cared about set up to it(current events) or not. When Twitter first started pretty much everybody was making totally insane attempts at jokes because it seemed the popular thing to do and it garnered strong followership, James Gunn, like a lot of other creative minds, wanted to create the identity of an eccentric, messed-up mind that created quirky cult favorites. It's a very different landscape today due to the political and sociological climate.
