This was always a great discussion on IMDB.
Curious to see Horror fans thoughts on 'Thrillers' and 'Suspense' being lumped in with 'Horror' on this new board.
I love all 3 genres. Horror is hands down my favorite though.
However I really enjoy a good Thriller/Suspense movie as well.
What are some of your favorite thriller/suspense movies out there with horror elements in them?
I'll kick things off with:
Identity (2003) - John Cusack
Terrific underrated flick. Suspenseful - keeps you guessing and has an great cast and atmosphere.
Fun ride. 7/10.

I think you could make a case for "Jaws" being in this category.

se7en is another terrific one. Yeah, Se7en is another good one. Zodiac too. Or even Basic Instinct. All great movies. Insomnia is another one (although no horror elements in there unless you consider struggling with one's own personal demons a bit horrific ala Requiem for a Dream). Al Pacino and Robin Williams are terrific. Underrated gem.

I still need to see Requiem for a Dream and Insomnia.

No other movie ripped my guts out like Requiem and Insomnia is a modern day classic. Pacino and Swank are great - Robin Williams steals the show in one of his epic 'dark roles' like One Hour Photo.

I'm not a fan of combining these genres on the forum. While I recognize that some films do seem to straddle the line between horror and thriller, and that defining the difference between horror and thriller is tough, there is a difference between them. And also, there are some people who like thrillers but who strongly dislike horror. They should have a home of their own. As for suspense, I think it's the odd genre out. Horror often uses suspense, but a suspense film isn't necessarily a horror film. Some films noir, for instance, use suspense, as does the action genre. Suspense shouldn't be included.
I'm not going to complain, as I don't think it's that important, but you asked, so that was my answer.

Because the topic always brings up a terrific debate on what is actually horror. I think it really comes down to one's own personal tastes, experiences in life and viewpoints. There's many movies in this thread - i.e. Silence of the Lambs which some are steadfast - that's it's not a horror. Me? It's absolutely a horror with a terrifying theme. It's what makes the horror genre so special in my eyes - what one views as 'horrific' is up to one's own mind.

In its content, it is a thriller, but it's tone is that of a horror film. There is such a strong sense of impending doom that pervades the entire movie. You are afraid from beginning to end in the same way that you are afraid in a horror film, but it's focus on Clarice Starling as a rookie FBI agent gives the film a plot normally found in thrillers. It straddles that line between the genres perfectly. It's one of the few films that should be labeled as a horror-thriller. Most horror thrillers are more one or the other, but not both equally.

I do believe there were separate sections when this board was started up, its lay-out w as like a copy of the previous imdb boards. But changes have been made, maybe this was one of the suggestions but did they come from horror fans. The admin might have just started to combine active sections with less active/inactive ones. Moviechat.org did keep the original imdb lay-out and offers more. Still a lot of work to do though.
While I do think all horror is thrilling I don't think every thriller is horrifying. I do think horror is certainly the superior genre but they are hard to separate. There are thriller fans disliking horror but I have yet to come across a horror fan hating thrillers. I agree suspense is way too general to combine it with horror.

Identity is one I actually own. Really boderline horror, love it! A few that might be labeled horror but could just be considered thriller as well as there isn't anything supernatural going on The Butterfly Room (2012) The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane (1976) I love this one a lot Orphan (2009) that's definitely very borderline The Call (2013) in some ways comparable to Silence of the Lambs The Bat (1926) The Spiral Staircase (1945) The Night of the Hunter (1955) fantastic first half The Missing (2003) The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923) Final Girl (2015) 10 ok that's more than enough I guess
