I didn't think it was possible, but last night Steven Matz actually did it. He out-Vargased Jason Vargas. The other night, Jason Vargas put up one of the most putrid performances I've ever seen, going 0.1 innings, walking 3 and giving up 4 runs, tossing just 17 of his 36 meatball pitches for strikes. If you watched it, it was worse than that line suggests, as Vargas went to at least 3 balls on every batter he faced. Last night, miraculously, headcase Steven Matz went 0.0 innings, giving up 8 runs (6 earned) on 31 pitches. Yup, he didn't get a single out. Disgusting.
My issue with Matz has always been his inability to regain focus after something doesn't go his way. He's the classic guy who will cruise through 3 or 4 innings, then get squeezed on one pitch, pout on the mound for a minute, and immediately give up 4 runs. He just has no ability to pitch his way out of trouble. So last night, when Rosario made an error early, it probably made Matz piss himself.
For Vargas though, on the year, he is carrying an ERA of 14.21, and a 2.842 WHIP across 6.1 AA-quality innings. But for you purists, he has 1 win against 0 losses, so I guess that's all that matters.

It was 10-0 in the first before I even turned the game on. I was like WTF? Thought for sure my tuning in would jinx them and the Mets would come back. I saw some stat that I think said heβs only the 4th or so pitcher since 1900 to give up 8 runs in the first without getting a single out. One of those flukey games.
