Sunday, March 27, 2004, in Robertson County, Tennessee, 21 year old Jennifer Wix went missing along with her 2 year old daughter, Adrianna Wix. The two were living with Jennifer’s boyfriend, Joey Benton, and his family. Joey Benton was not Adrianna’s father.
Joey Benton states he was the last person to see Jennifer and Adrianna. His story has changed sporadically, but the main constant was he had dropped Jennifer and Adrianna at a gas station, where Jennifer promptly told him to leave. He drove over to an adjacent parking lot and waited for approximately 7 minutes, watching Jennifer and Adrianna climb into a 4 door Van. He then changed his story; they had actually climbed into a 4 door mustang. Here’s the catch;
That model doesn’t exist. There is no existence of a 4 door mustang. Later, when the police confronted him with this fact, his father, stepped in and claimed he would never say such a thing, since Joey himself was a mustang enthusiast, owning two of the cars himself. The chief of police later fired the police officer who had taken down the original notation of Joey claiming they climbed into a car that didn’t exist. Joey then said they had climbed into a white colored mustang. Joey then later went back on his story and said it must have been a different model car.
After dropping them off, Joey stated Jennifer showed up at his home the next day to gather up some of her belongings. Joey included that Jennifer had told him that she was mad at her mother, not at him, and that her mother had threatened to take Adrianna away.
Jennifer’s mother, Kathy, says this simply isn’t true. Kathy had a serious conversation with Jennifer about her current living situation, but would have never threatened to take Adrianna away.
Kathy has been adamant that the police force botched this investigation on numerous occasions, and seemed like they simply weren’t interested. They had kept telling her that her daughter was 21, and could go where she pleased, and would probably turn up.
In the weeks that had followed the mother and daughters disappearance, Kathy had went around town posting flyers, trying to get the local community more involved, possibly to also do a massive search. On one instance, Kathy had went to the local gas station to hang the missing posters, where she was told it was “against policy” to hang such things.
Joey has also dropped off Jennifer and Adrianna’s belongings, 2-3 weeks after she had been missing. Kathy had said there was 6 black trash bags full of items. One of the items had been Adrianna’s pink coat. This alerted Kathy that Jennifer hadn’t planned to leave, as the nights in Tennessee were cool in the month of March, and that Jennifer would simply not have taken her two year old daughter, out in the cold without a coat.
In 2013, newly appointed Robertson County Sheriff, Bill Holt had promised the public and Kathy that he would bring justice to the now cold case.
Robertson County Sherifs department then soon after reclassified Jennifer and Adrianna’s case from “missing person” to “homicide”. Kathy still isn’t quite sure why.
A statement was released in December, 2013, stating that the Benton’s residence and property had been searched on 4 different occasions, including that a pond on the land had been searched and drained. They had also stated that no one, including Joey Benton, had been ruled out as a suspect.
Kathy believes her nephew might know something about their vanishing; Joey Benton and her nephew were best friends. Kathy’s sister and nephew has refused to talk to her since the case was reclassified as a homicide. The nephew reportedly has been uncooperative in the investigation.
It has been 15 years since Jennifer and Adrianna were last seen in March of 2004. Adrianna would be 17, and Jennifer would be 36.
