Be honest, you were cheering when Thanos power stone punched Captain Marvel into next week.
I admit I kind of was. If only because I was relieved she wasn't the one that beats him.

I thought she was dead. Thanos punched her right in the face using the power stone as brass knuckles. I almost jumped out of my seat, which never happens.
I really thought she died. It surprised to me to see her at Stark's funeral.

Really, kitty? You, too? I can't say that bit improved my feelings about this film. They had to give it to Tony, but sorry, even with his tech knowledge, he should have exploded like the Collector's assistant. Human. Danvers is powered by the Tesseract. Thor is a god. He's beat Quill's daddy more than once. Hulk barely managed, though I suspect part of the problem was trying to bring Widow back.

I've just watched this film again and I noticed that when Thanos grabbed the power stone to "power up" Carol had a "Oh shit!" Look on her face right before he punched her.
I liked the little touches like that.

I figured it wasn’t gonna be her anyway. The first act kept hammering in the “promise me” bit between two different characters so I narrowed it down to either or both those people.

Jumping out of my seat was only meant to convey my surprise. I thought she disintegrated on contact, but in saying that I didn't mean to come across too happy. I'm not anti-Captain Marvel or Brie Larson. It was more shock on my part as opposed to cheering.

Will Carol Dancers challenge Ronan or somebody to a dance off?

But seriously, they handled Captain Marvel perfectly in this movie. She was brought into the Avengers world but did not take anything away from the original Avengers who were the focus of this movie.

Agreed, they nailed it with CM. Some fans think she wasn't in it enough, while the haters think she played too big a role. The reality is, for the story they were trying to tell, she was in this movie as long as she needed to be. She had some important moments but she didn't steal anyone's thunder. Hers was a key role (she saved Tony!), but didn't dominate the storyline or swoop in to stop Thanos singlehandedly or anything. She even had a badass moment in the final battle without tipping the scales too far to the heroes. Endgame has its flaws, but as far as their usage of Captain Marvel, they got it right.

But with such a small role, it makes me wonder why they didn't just wait until after phase three to introduce her. Her solo movie would've been a good follow up to End Game to kick of phase four.

It's really a crazy story the more you find out about it. They didn't even have the script for CM written when they were filming Endgame?! People complain (and they aren't wrong) that CM doesn't earn her place on the team, doesn't have enough of a journey or character arc, etc. The irony is Brie Larson was handed a bullshit job and it's a miracle it wasn't a total disaster. "Ok, here are your lines for Endgame. No, we don't have a script for CM to give you a sense of how to play the character. I don't know, you're a space cop. Ok, go." "Ok, we finished the script for CM. You're going to have to figure out your motivation, your character has amnesia and was brainwashed. Also, your story is a prequel taking place long before your release date which is sandwiched between the biggest cinematic event in history. Good luck." Edit: To be clear, I'm not suggesting she was setup to fail. It's a Marvel movie for Christ's sake. I'm just saying her job was much harder than most actors in the MCU.

With all the hype that was behind her I thought she would travel through time with the Avengers. Why wasn’t she told about the plan anyway?

I liked CM in this way more than in her own movie but I still really disliked the part where she completely overpowers Thanos. If it wasn't for that part I would have happily been cheering her on. But because of that I found myself sighing in relief when Thanos powerstone-punched her lights out.

After all, they both got their powers from an Infinity Stone.
