I’m reading Heartland by Sarah Smarsh. It’s about growing up on a farm in Kansas and the hard scrabble life that was. What’s weird is that the book is written like a letter to the author’s daughter...the daughter she decided not to have.
I forget while I’m reading it that it’s for a nonexistent child then all of a sudden I read “That’s one of the reasons I decided not to have you...”
Quite jarring.
