Adam Wingard (Born: December 3, 1982 in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, USA)
Adam Wingard & Maika Monroe
Partying with the Guest ~ Marcella & Her Lovers - 'We Rewind'
.
I think writer-director Ti West could be considered one of American independent cinema's model all-rounders. If this is the case, then I also believe Adam Wingard's been giving him a serious run for his money. Wingard's a measured screenwriter, sharp editor, distinctive cinematographer and intuitive composer who's comfortable being described as horror's "jack of all trades". Born in Tennessee, Wingard's early operations saw him based in Alabama. He then moved to Missouri and shot films there. He worked with West on the 'V/H/S' retro franchise and co-directed a film in Illinois with indie auteur Joe Swanberg. Affectionately known back home as the 'Oak Ridge Boy', Wingard hasn't forgotten his roots, though he's currently working a lot in Canada.
Wingard's taut, unforgiving films drip with tension and at their best display the skills of a seasoned editor. He relishes unleashing set-plays drenched in musicality which is something that has the capacity to set his work apart. When he executes a tightly-wound sequence with trademark precision, the camera can switch from curious onlooker to deadly participant in an instant.
What are some of your favourite movies directed by Adam Wingard? Thanks.

I've got plenty of films still to see from film director Adam Wingard but I'd count myself among his fans. This is because I really like the few movies I've caught up with so far. He's currently preparing to deliver an Americanised remake of Jee-Woon Kim's popular Korean horror 'I Saw The Devil' (2010) which sounds like a tricky prospect.
Sharni Vinson contemplates death in 'You're Next' (2011)
Furry burlesque in 'The ABCs Of Death' (2012)
Dan Stevens takes aim in 'The Guest' (2014)
'Cool' - Soccer Mommy

I love The Guest and You're Next. "Q is For Quack" is the best segment of ABCs of Death and I also liked A Horrible Way To Die. I love his (and Simon Barret's) style of dark comedy. They're kinda lost without it, as Blair Witch and I assume Death Note showed.

I didn't enjoy 'A Horrible Way To Die' (2010). Forgot he directed that movie.

The cinematography can be offputting but I liked the twist. And AJ Bowen is a good actor.

Of what I’ve seen; I liked ‘em all so far. Well, his feature length films. ‘You’re Next’ and ‘The Guest’ are highly entertaining. Love the soundtracks for these films too. ‘A Horrible Way to Die’ and ‘Homesick’ were solid indie horror. Not perfect as a whole, but they had touches I liked. The latter film had some amusing parts from genre stars. Tiffany Shepis and Bill Moseley in ‘Home Sick’.As for the anthology films. ‘The ABC’s of Death’ was a creative short, while ‘VHS’ was okay and ‘VHS 2’ was pretty weak. Would like to check out ‘Death Note’.

I'd really like to see 'Home Sick', that sounds like something I might enjoy. Thanks for the recommendation.

The Guest and You're Next were pretty good. But I absolutely hated Blair Witch (2016). Interested in how Godzilla vs. Kong turns out.

I haven't seen A Horrible Way to Die, but I enjoyed You're Next and The Guest. Both are very slight, kinda dumb, but good light entertainment.
But Blair Witch and (especially) Death Note are truly terrible. Maybe it's something about him trying to make something resonant or iconic where it all falls apart, but when he's having fun that translates pretty well. When his goals are a little loftier it's laughably bad.

I like The Guest, but that's about it. I'm not too hot on his brand. I kind of feel the same about Adam Green, Ti West etc. Maybe I'm just becoming a crotchety old man already. 🤷🏻♂️
I am super jazzed to see Godzilla Vs. King Kong, though.

I think you’ll like it. Strange film... that only gets stranger and twisted as it goes along and the blood soaked splatter is very well done for a DIY film. It can feel aimless at times, but when it’s not being brutal it’s very offbeat when it came to the character interactions. The ‘Home Sick’ DVD I own has 3 short films by Wingard. The Girlfriend, Thousand Year Sleep and Laura Panic. Need to check them out.
