Our tribute watch this week in honour of the great Argentinian born British director John Llewellyn Moxey was his American TV film, Nightmare in Badham County (1976) and as the title suggests it is an absolute shocker set in the backwoods of America's deep South, a film I would highly recommend, but a warning ! not for all tastes.
Greer (Tina Louise): You got 2 seconds to get away from that fence n****r!
Sarah prisoner: Raise that strap to me white trash and I will tear your ugly heart out!
The film premiered in the US first on TV in a 93min cut version, but it had an uncut 104min theatrical release overseas which shows much full frontal nudity and some disturbing violent acts. Playing much like a horror film, the towns people seem indifferent there is an air of helplessness of sordid menace, some moments are very uncomfortable viewing. The soundtrack is a knockout filling each scene with the appropriate atmospheric mood from buzzing blowflies to bluegrass to discordant nerve jarring effects...
The story tells the tale of two attractive young female students on a road trip who become trapped in a small town in Mississippi after their car has a flat and they fill up for gas. The only law the sheriff has taken a dislike to the strangers and they find themselves before the court, the Judge happens to be the Uncle of the Sheriff ! facing trumped up charges enough to send them to the notorious local prison farm... no spoilers here, thats enough said...
What a cast ... starring with tremendous performaces the hapless travellers Deborah Raffin and Lynne Moody , Chuck Connors is the perverted lawless Sheriff, Brady Bunch dad Robert Reed is the ultra sleazy farm boss , Tina Louise is the sadistic brutal guard , Fionnula Flanagan another brutal guard has a slight touch of humanity and there are lots more great characters...
A big surprise is the fact that Nightmare. was a huge hit in China. The film's success in China was so substantial that star Deborah Raffin became the unofficial ambassador from Hollywood to China; she arranged meetings between Hollywood luminaries and Chinese leaders and filmmakers to get Chinese films distributed in America. Raffin blonde tall and beautiful, perhaps explains why ?
British director Moxey drags up ghosts from the past ? it can be no coincidence the locale chosen for the film has a horror history of bigoted intolerance. The fictional town setting of Badham is no backlot studio facade and this is where the story really takes on a reality of chilling dimensions. The film was shot in the staunchly Confederate small town of Carrolton, Mississippi and features the infamous couthouse where in 1886... but that is another very real horror story...
