One of baseball's biggest jackass. Wait why. Read multiple sources that called him out as a 24 karat asshole. Aloof, mean, egotistical. Don Drysdale (fairly certain it was Drysdale) when asked why the late 50's-60's Dodgers almost always came out on top of the Giants, he replied "We didn't have Mays". The reporter was incredulous but DD pointed out many examples of Mays being clubhouse cancer. The Dodgers were a team, the Giants were Willie's supporting cast. I knew a memorabilia dealer who had an authentic Mays NY Giants game worn jersey. He went to a show with Mays and paid his fee to get it signed. Mays autographed it but wrote a message on the inside in indelible ink. "Go Fuck Yourself". Just last week, Chris Russo was talking about how he's a Giants fan and showing his autographed ball from the 1971 Giants. All signed it but the Say Hay Kid and you could hear the contempt in Mad Dog's voice when he said that.

Greatest speed/power combo in history, probably. Would have had 700-720 homers if he hadn't lost almost two years to the Army. It would have made things very interesting with Mays and Henry Aaron nearly equal in HR's and Ruth's record in sight. But Willie was too far behind and in worse shape. Many many baseball players were jerks. Babe Ruth was a debauched clown, Cobb was a maniac, Rogers Hornsby was a truly nasty person, Mickey Mantle was a selfish drunk etc etc etc.

Loved Willie throughout his career.
