I enjoyed the remake. But the original was best.

I think the 2004 remake is the best zombie movie. It's also, goes without saying, my favorite.

Original is good but drags in places. I liked the 2004 one, but would probably go with 78.

The original is far superior if only because the characters have to EARN the mall. Risky missions to secure the trucks, move them into position, get more trucks, etc., followed by racing around the mall securing the door locks and alarms, followed by a (not shown) mall hunt and clearing the bodies. Unreal. In 2004 they just walk right in, kill 1 zombie, and own the place.
Also, in the original, they go to great pains to secure their base and hide its location.
My favorite aspects of the original, totally lacking in the remake.

The remake is a fun action movie, but the original is a more thoughtful, atmospheric experience.

I prefer the original by far but the 2004 version is definitely one of the better remakes I've seen.

1978 by far...I quite enjoy the 2004 version but the characters do too many stupid things...Deciding to leave the mall because they don't want to die there? Good grief...I guess dying outside the mall much sooner was a better choice...You have supplies and safe haven from the zombies...And that girl who takes the truck to get the dog at the gun shop without formulating a plan to get there? Leaking stupid all over the place... EXACTLY. The remake is well made and entertaining up to a point but as the movie progresses they all get increasingly more stupid. The decision to basically leave the mall so they can die in a much more horrific excruciating way is mind numbing stupid. Their reasons for leaving were so painfully pointless it seemed like the writers assumed they could just poop out any nonsense and the audience would gobble it up. The idiot girl's dog saving fiasco was even worse. The last third of the movie was total eye rolling garbage. Other than the guy who stayed on the dock because he was bitten I was happy to see them all die horribly after nearly starving to death. What else did the morons think would happen?

The original of course, remake is pretty soulless with characters I wish a painful death.I wasn't overly impressed with the remake, and yet while it is acceptable and being the horror ghoul I am, I don't own it. That says so much about the film to me and how I feel about it. The "soulless" aspect is pretty much hitting the nail on the head, and not just DOTD remake, but many of these millennial horror film reboots. The original DOTD is in my top 5 horrors of all time and while not particularly scary, the apocalyptic horror that was portrayed, the main characters involved and their drama\dilemma, and the clever social satire of the film, makes it original and groundbreaking and is streets ahead of the reboot that was hardly trendsetting. All they did was make the zombies faster. I guess that was more for the newbie ADHD crowd, so they wouldn't get bored. funny. because i feel the same about the original that many feel the same about the remake. i guess we're a product of our times. i couldn't get invested in the characters in the original. it was just bad cheesey acting and there were like 3 male actors who looked identical with the same 1970s 'bowl haircut'. i couldn't distinguish one character from the next from their looks and their bland dull personalities. remake? i became invested in the characters - you had a love story - and a true story of redemption (bad guy turning guy), heart warming scenes of a father dying, a dog possibly going down, a hero telling everyone to go on without him. masterpiece. modern day classic.

Your masterpiece would never have been without the old cheesy product pal Had they opted for a different title you might call it a modern time classic but since they decided to use Dawn of the Dead there will always be comparisons with the 1978 even though there is not that many similarities between the 2, the shopping mall and the zombies but it's pretty different for the rest. Night of the Living Dead remake is much closer to the original, Dawn remake should be called "Zombies invaded the Shopping Mall" or something similar

It's okay to love both, they're really quite different from each other, and the stories are almost totally different. Watched both again back-to-back last week. The 2004 version was just out to entertain, loved this nod to The Shining (1980).

The original. The remake is very good and entertaining. I liked how they didn't just copy the original. The basics were there; zombies and a mall but apart from those and maybe a couple of more things it was very different. I would have preferred slow moving zombies but for this one off I suppose it helped move things along.

Both are great, and I actually saw the 2004 version first. That said, the original is better. It has less characters, which made you care for them more, and the gore was sure ahead of its time.
