I know the '78 original is regarded as a classic to many.
2004 in a landslide for me. It's a modern day classic IMO.
Great character development and acting. Tense scenes. Terrific soundtrack. The right comedic relief placed in the right spots. Gut wrenching ending.
One of the few movies out there for me that you actually 'rooted' for the characters to make it.
1-0 2004.
Go!

I've seen both many times, but the first was like an event to me (summer of 79, released unrated!). The remake ups the ante with an incredible opening sequence. I liked that much better than the original. But once we get into the story and start going to the mall, etc., the first one really shines. Loved the late 70s look to all the stores and merchandise. I can't recall...does the remake feature the biker gang?

Both have their merits, but I'll go with the original. I'll always take the look of 70s celluloid over the look of most movies these days... video? whatever.
Kudos to the '04 version though, for being one of the very few remakes that don't suck.
Both films pale in comparison to Night of the Living Dead (1968) ..... sorry, just had to throw that in.... it's my favorite horror film.

I haven't seen the 04 version in at least 8 years, I should pick it up actually (if it's cheap enough), I remember liking it.
I'm going to have to give my vote to the original though. It sticks out much more in my mind, Ken Foree was great in that movie. Tom Savini's gore also has a very distinct look which I enjoy.

Tough choice.
I connected more with the characters in the 1978 film. Easier to do, of course, since there were so few of them. Being a fan of classic horror, I'd say I have a slight preference for this one.
However - the 2004 film has a far better final act and ending. Unlike the '78 film, it never really runs out of steam.

2004 for me - superb opening sequence, good characters, muchos action, and a blood chilling sequence in the end credits. 1978 doesn't deliver the energy.

I saw the remake first, & enjoyed it, but I much prefer the original.

I can't get over the cheese factor of the original. I couldn't get invested in any of the characters either. To each their own - there's so many hardcore fans of the original out there and this guy just doesn't 'get it' - to me the perfect two zombie movies out there are 'Night of the Living Dead' and the 2004 'Dawn' masterpiece.

Romero's film, no contest! The remake is OK but it's not scary. It's more of an action flick with zombies than a horror film.

Love '78. The remake is OK at best.

2004 hands down. The original night of the living dead is my favorite zombie movie ever. But I never liked Dawn all that much for some reason.
The 2004 version however is everything I want in a zombie movie. Great gore and action sequences. Good writing and characters. And over all just really well directed. One of the best remakes ever. The remake really captures the terror of what an event that this would be like.
The old version is just too cheesy for me to get into.

1978 by far...I quite enjoy the 2004 version but the characters do too many stupid things...Deciding to leave the mall because they don't want to die there? Good grief...I guess dying outside the mall much sooner was a better choice...You have supplies and safe haven from the zombies...And that girl who takes the truck to get the dog at the gun shop without formulating a plan to get there? Leaking stupid all over the place...

I love both, but the original is my favorite movie of all time. It's very entertaining, it has great likeable characters (Roger is one of my favorite characters of all time and I thought his death was so sad), it has some of the most memorable zombies ever (Flyboy as a zombie was creepy as fuck), it has a lot of nice gore and it has a fantastic soundtrack. Oh and it offers everything you could possibly want from a movie: action, drama, suspense, horror obviously, comedy and even romance.
DOTD (1978): 10/10 DOTD (2004): 8.5/10
