I believe one of the major factors for Venom’s success was that its second trailer was attached to showings of Avengers: Infinity War, which was a film that made over 2 billion dollars and that means a higher than average audience watched the trailer. And it was selling an action packed Marvel branded superhero film about a cool looking character who’s design screams Spider-Man. This is the kind of stuff that would interest much of Infinity War’s demographic.
Besides the false marketing that it was connected to Endgame Captain Marvel’s selling point was that it was a female lead superhero movie and played on female power fantasy, calling her the strongest Marvel character that possesses cosmic power. That of course attracted a massive female crowd that composed of of 45% of its audiences.
Dark Phoenix’s second trailer was also selling a female led superhero film about cosmically powered Marvel character who is said in the trailer as having godlike power. I’ve seen many women who want to see this movie after seeing Captain Marvel because its about a powerful female superhero character and they want to support films like that, with some of them having never seen any of the previous X-Men movies. Even if the trailer to Dark Phoenix didn’t play in their showing of Captain Marvel they likely saw Endgame for more Captain Marvel and watched the final trailer.
Like Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame has also made over 2 billions and even surpassed the first film. The final of Dark Phoenix is attached to it and its selling another Marvel branded movie that is about a superhero team with the lead character being a cool looking hero/villain who’s design screams Scarlet Witch. I’ve seen the comment section of the trailer on YouTube greatly increase after Endgame released and and the views have jumped significantly. So it seems to be gaining interest.
Apparently, Simon Kinberg said that this was one of the main reasons why they delayed the film for a second time.

Shouldn't it be a smart move by Disney since they own it now?

Shouldn't it be a smart move by Disney since they own it now? That’s what Fox wants you to think! They get credit by giving credit to the parent company.
