On February 25th, 2014, dog-walkers enjoying a nice day out on Perranporth Beach in Cornwall made the disturbing discovery of a corpse, washed up during the high tide. When emergency services arrived, they immediately noted that several aspects were very suspicious: Multiple cuts and bruises were present over the man’s body, which a pathologist later confirmed had been sustained while the victim was still alive. He was also completely naked, apart from socks and a single shoe. The conditions were not stormy, so it was impossible for the man’s clothes to have ripped from his body as he was thrown about in the waves. Strangest of all, was that the mystery man’s mouth had been stuffed with someone else’s sock and a pair of iPhone headphones. But who was he?
After extensive appeals, police discovered the man to be Alan Jeal, a retired electrician who was born in London but grew up in the area. He was adopted, alongside his siblings Derek and Linda, and was said to have had a perfectly normal childhood. Growing up around the beaches of Polzeath, Alan was a keen surfer and lived a happy life with various other hobbies including playing squash, sports cars, photography, bee keeping, mining and mineral collecting. He was an avid reader, focusing his attention on detective stories and science fiction works. He also enjoyed computing, online gaming and computer programming. It seems weird then, that he would want to harm himself in such an unusual and violent way.
If Alan wasn't murdered, which I personally think he was, then the events leading up to his death are likely to have started in 2004, when Alan moved towns and lived as a hermit, rarely speaking to others. This is when it appears he shut himself off from the outside world completely. According to detectives, he rarely spent his money on any luxuries, just on groceries and wine. He didn't own a car, failed to stay in touch with family properly, and even stopped surfing after a while. His last known social interaction was at New Years in 2014, and he appeared "normal" to his family. Bizarrely, his last purchase was that of a 10kg weighted training vest and 2kg ankle weights from Amazon, which were never located. It is unclear why Mr Jeal bought the training equipment, as he was not known to have exercised. Perhaps he was trying to drown himself with the weighted clothing?
5 years on, and Alan Jeal’s death remains unsolved. His family are convinced that foul play was involved due to the fact he appeared to be gagged with a sock. Despite the suspicious circumstances, a coroner reported that “this may be a very unusual suicide or an accident.” as the injuries are consistent with somebody who fell from a great height. With such little evidence to go on, the case is likely to remain a mystery.
