Why would anybody mention the 2011 movie in a thread like this, but not the 1982 movie? COME ON!!! "Well actually I quite liked the 2011 prequel because it had an attractive girl in it. I was so surprised she showed her butt on Fargo, LOL." What do you think of the 2011 movie anyway?

The thing 2011 is like someone forgetting they were supposed to do a prequel. So last minute they went back and added a scene for the credits.

Actually the studio wanted a remake and then the writers asked if they could make a prequel instead. This is why the movie is technically a prequel, but feels like a remake.

I always thought the studio wanted a prequel. Not the other way around. Speaking of The Thing, how come we don’t have a remaster of the game yet?

I heard the studio originally intended it to be a remake, but I am not sure who exactly pushed the idea of a prequel instead.

So am I the only one who likes Fright Night 2011? I watched the movie years ago, and liked it. I wasn't aware at the time it was a remake.

So am I the only one who likes Fright Night 2011? I know it has it's fans, but it is a middle of the road remake imo. Not good, but not bad either. Like many remakes it just has no reason to exist and it misses the fun and creepiness of the original.

The texas chainsaw massacre (2003) kickstarted the 2000s fad for remakes of past American horror hits. I saw too many of them, but these, at least, I rated a passing 5/10.
the texas chainsaw massacre (2003) dawn of the dead (2004) the last house on the left (2009) the crazies (2010)* piranha (2010)* the wolfman (2010) fright night (2011)
close.. halloween, 2001 maniacs, the hills have eyes, don't be afaid of the dark, evil dead
there was also the fad for remakes of recent Asian horror..5/10 the ring (2002) dark water (2005)
haven't seen the most recent remakes..

I agree that most of those are tolerable remakes. I hate the Last House on the Left remake though. The first half is good, the second half is mediocre and the very ending is awful. The original is already a shock horror remake of The Virgin Spring, so doing a glossy remake of it seems even more pointless.

Just the following three movies...
-The Last House on the Left (2009) - 6-6.5/10 (within my Top 203 movies) -Dawn of the Dead (2004) - 6/10 -Halloween (2007)
all better than the originals if you ask me and The Last House on the Left (2009) is much better than the original 1972 movie which I gave a 2/10.
p.s. I don't think I have seen the original Dawn of the Dead (1978) but I doubt it's going to be better than the 2004 movie as, given my impression from the trailer, I am confident ill like the 2004 movie more. hence, my claim above.

Re-makes (including re-adaptations)
The Thing Dawn Of The Dead Invasion Of The Bodysnathers/Bodysnatchers/Invasion Hills Have Eyes The Fly Piranha The Blob The Mummy (1999)
On the subject of The Thing prequel, I thought it was pretty good. Considering what we already knew about the Norwegian camp and the nature of the creature, it was pretty impossible to make a film that was not similar to the 1982 film.

I Spit on Your Grave remake fixes everything I didn’t like about the original and is a much more enjoyable film.
I like aspects of Halloween, Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street remakes but I can’t say I prefer any of them over the originals.
The Blob remake, even tho I haven’t seen the original, I enjoy.
If the Mummy counts Id add that to the list. The one with Brendan Frazier not Tom Cruise.

it was pretty impossible to make a film that was not similar to the 1982 film. yes. there's only so much you can do with a bunch of isolated characters and a rampaging monster. Characters with memorable personalities do help to hold interest and in the thing prequel the cast was somewhat faceless and forgettable.
