Benioff & Weiss: make seven seasons that the fanboys liked. Also Benioff & Weiss: make one season that the fanboys find "divisive". Fanboys: "Ohmagurd this is the worst show ever! REEEEEE!!! I'm throwing out all the past seasons of Game of Thrones that I own! REEEEEEEEE!!!! I'll boycott anything else that Benioff and Weiss make in the future! REEEEEEEEE!!!!!"
A similar thing happened with the Star Wars fandom...
Disney/Lucasfilm: Make two SW movies that are generally well-received (even if TFA receives some criticism for being a rehash of A New Hope). Rian Johnson: makes three well-received independent movies. Disney/Lucasfilm & Rian Johnson: release a SW movie that many fanboys don't like. Fanboys: "Ohmagurd, Star Wars is dead! REEEEEEEEE!!!! Lucasfilm hates the fans! REEEEEEEEE!!!!!! I'll never watch any movie Rian Johnson ever directs again! REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!"
In short, these aren't rational people.

Most people aren't rational. Least of all those who define themselves by the things they love. Love is not a rational thing, not a decision people take based on analytical considerations.
I despise the last three seasons because the writing changed in nature. It used to be like watching chess players. That's what I liked. It no longer is, so I no longer watch. It's more like wrestling now. The themes the story carries and people's reactions to it remain a most interesting discussion subject, though. That's what I liked even more than watching the chess game in earlier seasons. It was always divisive. My first posting on the old IMDb board was written in defence of Tywin Lannister.
So I read recaps and keep discussing.
