BFI or British Film Institute put together a list of 10 French Crime or Gangster movies that ought to be mandatory for anyone who likes movies. And I'm not one of them who has seen them all! And please discuss after you've seen the pics! Here are the ten vital ones: Pepe Le Moko 1937 remade in USA as AlgiersTouchez pas au grisbi 1954 aka Hands Off the Loot
Du rififi chez les hommes 1955 aka simply Rififi

L'Aîné des Ferchaux aka "Magnet of Doom" which is a far cooler name than it deserves.

I've seen 5 of the 10 and love all 5.
Pepe Le Moko Rififi Bob le Flambeur Le Circle Rouge Mesrine, Parts I and II
I also second adding these to the list of essential French crime movies.
Elevator to the Gallows Purple Noon
And suggest these:
La Mariée Était En Noir (The Bride Wore Black) Le Corbeau (The Raven) Le Samouraï Coup De Torchon (Clean Slate) Le Trou (The Hole) Ne Le Dis Á Personne (Tell No One)
Of course, these are way too many to fit a 10 title list, but I never have a number limit if compiling the "Best" of anything. As many as I think are the Best, they go on the list. Shall we shoot for Top 20 or 25?

Surprised BREATHLESS didn't make the cut
Have seen 7 of the 10 I think and would rate the MESRINE films the best.
PURPLE NOON is certainly a good addition.
LES DIABOLIQUES and LES LOUVES could usefully be added too.
and going a bit more modern how about MONSIEUR HIRE ? (or its ancestor PANIQUE)
LOVE CRIME?
and the deliciously naughty L'AMANT DOUBLE

LE MATAF - watchable because of STELVIO CIPRIANI's awesome score, full length role for CATHY ROSIER (of LE SAMOURAI), leading role for the french lee marvin - MICHEL CONSTANTIN.

Surprised to see De battre mon coeur s'est arrêté The Beat That My Heart Skipped (2005) listed ? "Cinéma du look" the film has drawn diverse critical responses, I am with the naysayers on this one... L'étrange Monsieur Victor (1938) An engrossing crime tale ahead of its time with a dark nourish atmosphere tells of the secret life of a merchant from Toulon. Victor Agardanne (Raimu) is a socially respected man outwardly honourable, however he is in fact a fence handling stolen goods for a band of hardened criminals. Blackmail, murder, an innocent man condemned, this is a superb highly recommended French Crime Classic film from director Jean Grémillon
