The more I think about it, the more I believe Sonic the Movie Trailer was purposely designed like that for THAT trailer only.
I think they have been making it with the real Sonic design this whole time, and they made that trailer to generate memes, tweets, trailer views "Hey, did you see that Sonic Trailer"?
Then after it's dying down the director tweets they are "fixing it fast". The more I thought about it, a studio isn't going to spend that much money to "fix" it? Especially only a few months away from release. There isn't enough time.
Why would they do this?
A) Generate Free Buzz. B) Gain favor from fans but making it look like they care about their opinion, listened, and fixed it. C) So when they reveal the real Sonic design it will be universally loved. Nobody will complain because it will be so much better than that abomination. D) More people will see it, out of curiosity to find out what the buzz was all about.

I agree. Also they don’t have time to “fix” it before November.

That's like the theory that New Coke was created in order to generate a demand for the original.

Nah, I think they just legitametly fucked up. First off, that kind of CGI can't be cheap to make, even if it's just for a trailers. Lots of time and money I'm sure went into it, even if Sonic does look like shit. 2nd keep in mind, a lot of the live action stuff has probably already been filmed, it's just a matter of greenscreening Sonic into the rest, so it's quite possible they hadn't even started on a lot of the CGI animation anyways, so it's not like they may even really have to back and fix anything if they haven't even really started to begin with. 3rd since this is supposed to be live action and not animation, they were probably aiming for "realism" with Sonic, but instead wound up hitting the Uncanny Valley.

I doubt it. Sometimes, studios are just stupid.

I doubt it. Sometimes, studios are just stupid. They tend to rely too much on focus groups, which is often subject to a number of issues (observer effect and herd mentality come to mind)
