It’s just for a crossover with Sheena. Text: It turns out that the year mentioned in Wonder Woman 1984's title also holds significance to the plot. During an interview on Deadline's Crew Call podcast, director Patty Jenkins explained that, "1984 itself is definitely very evocative to what's important in that movie and resonates with right now," adding in that she thinks, "it was the pinnacle of the success in the 80s." She went on to explain that there's, "something about the excess of that period of time, which is so linked up to where we are in the world right now, that it's set there for a reason." screenrant.com/wonder-woman-2-1984-setting-specific-reason/

So I read the article and my first response is this. What the heck is she babbling about? My guesstimation is that they'll take a stab or two at Wall Street and the whole "greed is good" mantra. I mean, Pedro Pascal's character looks exactly like a young Donald Trump and he's supposedly a villain in the movie alongside Cheetah.

Why is it set in 1984? Because.
It could have been set at any time. There's no particular significance to 1984.
As a matter of fact I would have set it in the tumultuous 60's when all kinds of significant socio-economic change was going on. Vietnam, social rights movements, moon landing. etc.
Or if you have a jones on for the 80's why not 86 when the Berlin wall came down? The end of the cold war!
Or the 90's - gulf war
or 2000's - 9/11, Iraq/Afghanistan war's...
And that's not to mention WWII
There's no real reason to set it specifically in 1984 except.... because.

Because Snyder had her be around in WW1 but inactive for the next 100 years until Batman v Superman. No reason this would be a period piece of any kind if he didn't make that arbitrary decision. Then her first film and this one ignores that she abandoned humanity because of WW1, then Justice League brought it up again.

Is Wonder Woman going to run through a mall, turning the horror of consumerism into a key villian? How exciting! The big question is - will she be sporting '80's hair?
