Josef von Sternberg was born 125 years ago in May 29, 1894 in Vienna, Austria-Hungary. Austrian-American filmmaker whose career successfully spanned the transition from the silent to the sound era, during which he worked with most of the major Hollywood studios. He is best known for his film collaboration with actress Marlene Dietrich in the 1930s, including the highly regarded Paramount/UFA production, The Blue Angel 1930. Sternberg's finest works are noteworthy for their striking pictorial compositions, dense décor, chiaroscuro illumination and relentless camera motion, endowing the scenes with emotional intensity. He is also credited with initiating the gangster film genre with his silent era movie Underworld 1927 Sternberg's themes typically offer the spectacle of an individual's desperate struggle to maintain their personal integrity as they sacrifice themselves for lust or love. He directed a bit over 30 movies, and here is a few examples in pictures: The Salvation Hunters 1925 Underworld 1927 The Lost Command 1928 The Docks of New York 1928 The Blue Angel 1930 Morocco 1930 Dishonored 1931 An American Tragedy 1931 Shanghai Express 1932 Blonde Venus 1932 The Scarlet Empress 1934 The Devil is a Woman 1935 Crime and Punishment 1935 The King Steps Out 1936 Sergeant Madden 1939 The Shanghai Gesture 1941 Macao 1952 The Saga of Anatahan 1952 Jet Pilot 1957 (Steinberg's parts were made in 1950) Published in 1965. Published in 1971 Josef von Sternberg left us in late December 1969, aged 75. Thanks for watching! Hope you enjoyed and maybe gave you a few new ideas! Discussions are free and very welcome!

OOOH yes = some splendid films on his CV
THE SHANGHAI GESTURE my absolute favourite - astonishing sets and atmosphere of corruption and depravity
SHANGHAI EXPRESS also excellent (and has just been voted second best film of 32 on the I Love Film site
AN AMERICAN TRAGEDY - lacks the swoonsome clinches of the more famous remake - and Frances Dee gets only a fraction of the attention Liz got in the same role in the later flic -but is probably a more faithful adaptation
MACAO a good knockabout adventure potboiler with well matched stars
UNDERWORLD (marvellous) and THE LOST COMMAND saw him fetishise Evelyn Brent in feathers and furs
JET PILOT was a dog though - and I'm not fond of some of the later Dietrichs - overstuffed and dull as ditchwater

Really liked Shanghai Express and Crime & Punishment. Thought Morocco and Macao were "meh".
