Gonna try and pick that series back up after the weekend. Kinda feeling the void of fantasy in my life.
Wish me luck.

I really want to get into that series, but the number of volumes (not to mention page counts) seems a bit daunting.

Sorry I was out of town for a few days... Wheel of Time is a fantasy series...I guess high fantasy I’ve heard it called. Plenty of magic and creatures and things like that. Deals with the reincarnation of an extremely powerful mage and his battle with the good and evil within the magic he wields. There’s a huge cast of characters and plenty of other plot lines. The first novel feels a ton like the first lord of the rings where a group of somewhat small town people all have to flee their village and spend most of the novel traveling to some destination while being perused by forces of evil. It branches away from the LOTR feel a lot after the first novel. Really kinda becomes its own thing.

The series completely grinds to a halt in the middle, as the writer becomes obsessed with describing items of clothing in excruciating detail. It also becomes increasingly hard to distinguish between the female characters as they’re written almost exactly the same, with nary a unique voice to be found.

I read the 7th and 8th books of the series this year….and boy is Jordan descriptive lol. I honestly have zoned out so many times when he’s introducing person after person after person. These meetings in tents to discuss strategy and battle plans and whatnot that usually just devolve into people acting pissy and childish, are so thick with distracting and tedious detail. It’s like trying to see the forest but you’re focused on every piece of bark for minutes at a time. Sigh…and to leave Mats cliffhanger story from book 7 completely out of book 8? What the fck? I’ve read I’m around the ‘slog’ where the Wheel gets stuck in the mud, so to speak. There are silver linings and cool moments brought down by so much seemingly irrelevant detail. But I hear it gets better.

I'm enjoying it a lot more this time around, though to be fair I'm on book 4 which is unanimously considered among the best. We'll see how I feel when I get to those dreaded 7th and 8th books and beyond.

It’s an incredible breath of fresh air.

The changes all feel warranted and welcome, and some things, like the savagery of the trollocs, never came through on paper as well as they are in these episodes so far.

I can’t remember where I stopped. Either after book 8 or 9. Every time I dip into other fantasy series they fly and it usually feels like a slog coming back to ajordan unfortunately.
