Carroll Baker Carroll Baker was born May 28, 1931 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. After studying under Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio, she began performing on Broadway in 1954. From there she was recruited by director Elia Kazan to play the lead in the film, Baby Doll. She received an Oscar nomination as Best Actress for her performance in that. Baby Doll (1956), with Eli Wallach Her next role was in Giant (1956), which was actually released first, so people often think that was her first film. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, her range of roles from young ingénues to brash and flamboyant women established her as both a pin-up and serious dramatic actress. In 1955 she married director, Jack Garfein, with whom she had two children, daughter Blanche Baker, who later became an Emmy winning actress, and Herschel Garfein, who later became a Tony Award winning composer and director. She and Jack later divorced, but were still married when he directed her in one of her most memorable roles in Something Wild (1961), with Ralph Meeker. Among her other notable American films are The Carpetbaggers, with George Peppard, How the West Was Won, Harlow, Cheyenne Autumn, The Watcher in the Woods, Native Son, Star 80, Ironweed, and Kindergarten Cop.
In the 1960s she spent several years in in Italy making horror films and thrillers. When she returned to America, she became more of a character actress in films and television shows. In 2003 she retired after a memorable 49 year career.
Happy Birthday, Carroll Baker. Thanks for the memories.
