At Carl LaFong 's suggestion, I'm moving this question from the INTK board to here--if anyone has an answer, could you please let me know? On my "Favorite Whodunit Films" thread, Doghouse6 referenced the movie Mr. and Mrs. North ('42), starring Gracie Allen. That reminded me of a comic husband-and-wife mystery-solving couple picture from the '40s that I saw years ago but of which I cannot remember the title. Can anyone help? What I remember: The husband and wife go to some hotel. There are murders (of course). I think the murderer was the hotel manager, The climax comes when the husband is thrown into a chest and dumped in a lake (or something like that). (He does end up escaping--no surprise there, is it?) Does anyone know this one? I can't seem to find it. Oh, and it probably goes without saying, but it's not a Thin Man. P.S. I'll also add this: if it helps, the movie was probably based on a book by one of the mystery authors of the period, just as Mr. and Mrs. North was based on a series by Richard and Frances Lockridge.

For some reason I came to think of a novel by Agatha Christe "N or M", because it was about her characters Tommy and Tuppence at a seaside resort hotel or Inn, but since I think it's one of the later books with that couple, so it would be impossible that it could have been done in the 1940s. However, for totally unexplainable reasons it made me think of Carole Landis and a movie called Having Wonderful Crime 1946 co-staring Pat O'Brien and George Murphy. George and Carole are honeymooners at the rustic Lenhart Lodge (sounds like a hotel), and among the plotwords is a trunk (or chest). Look further into it and see if it's the one you are chasing, this one is very loosly based on a crime novel by Craig Rice.

At the very least, it looks similar. I'm going to take a look at it on Internet Archive later and get back to you. Thanks!

I was finally able to take a look at that clip, teleadm , and I'm almost certain that's the one! As I wrote to tarathian123 on the other thread: "There's the lake--there's the mystery solving couple--there's the blonde--no chest, but, hey, they're tied up, and there's dialogue about a trunk!--there's a lodge--and there's a different scene set at a bar! "Yup, I'm pretty sure this is the one." Thanks for your help! Nice to have my mind put to rest at last on this one, at least. Salzmank

Just a little interesting note about Craig Rice's book that I think is why the film is only loosly based on his book, and that could have been too strong to stomach for the audiences and Hay's office in the 1940's. In the book the murderer decapitates the victims heads and put them unto each others bodies. Never seen the movie, but read the book, found it in a flea market cheap bin, one of those old pocket books that actually fits in a pocket.
