I just saw this in The Guardian and came here to post it before you did! You snooze, you lose! So unfair! You're five hours ahead of me and having tea and crumpets before I even wake up!

I read a story, that screenwriter T.E.B. Clarke found Roy Horniman's novel in a cheap bin outside an Antique Books store, liked the title, bought it and read it, took it to Ealing and presented it as a possible story that could be made into a movie, though not directly to Michael Balcon, but somebody else.
T.E.B. Clarke wasn't involved in the actual film itself.
I wish I could remember were I read it, so I could put in a reference. It was in a book and not on the net, that I know.
