I have an ASUS ROG Strix Scar Edition 17.3 Gaming Laptop and trying to connect it to a Samsung tv. I use FN and the F( key and it gives me 4 options for project
PC SCREEN ONLY DUPLICATE EXTEND SECOND SCREEN ONLY
Whatever option I try-I click on it or hit ENTER and nothing happens. Still no signal to tv. I know the HDMI cable works since I can hook it up to an old PC and it immediately gets the signal.
Any suggestions? I did the updates for the Windows (I heard Windows 10 has problems with such things) still nothing. What else can I try?

Well the newest Windows 10 is 1903. to see if your running this check the following... type 'about' in the search box which should bring up 'about your PC' and select that and once it loads scroll down to where it shows 'Windows specifications' and next to 'version' will probably show 1809 or 1903. also, there could be driver updates for your laptop as taking a quick look at your specs (like based on the name of the laptop you listed.. "ASUS ROG Strix Scar Edition 17.3 Gaming") it shows you got something around a Geforce 1050-1070 GPU (or thereabouts). you can get newest GPU drivers here... www.geforce.com/drivers (just use the 'Manual Driver Search' and input the correct options there) ; basically v430.86 is the newest drivers from May 27th 2019. besides, even if that does not fix your issue it's a good idea to keep that updated due to potential security fixes etc. I have a 1050 Ti 4GB on my main desktop and it never has issues connecting to the TV I have on Windows 10 (or Linux) through HDMI port as it just works straight up with a dual monitor setup like usual where you drag the video from the PC monitor side to the TV and run full screen etc. but basically there must be someway to tell the laptop to output video to the HDMI port which I assume is tied to that FN key and whatever F key is the HDMI port etc. I have a older laptop with a HDMI port but I never tested it on the TV as I only use my primary computer for connecting to the TV through 20' HDMI cable.

I tried going to the Intel properties but when I tried second screen detection it blanked the screen and I had to do a forced reboot. I also tried downloading the newest driver but when I tried installing it gave me all this "this isn't approved by the Microsoft store/ bs This is so irritating. Hooking up to a tv shouldn't be this hard.

You probably have some random BS installed (or some weird configuration) as that should not block installing a NVIDIA driver if you have a NVIDIA GPU. do you have a exact link to the laptop you have just so I can be sure of the GPU you have etc? ; but you mentioned 'Intel' which they do make some GPU's but since you mentioned 'gaming' in your initial post chances are you got a NVIDIA GPU and not Intel one since NVIDIA/AMD are the only major players in the gaming market. if you got Windows 10 1903 I would download the ISO from Microsoft's website (i.e. www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 ; use the 'download tool now' as you can get a ISO file using that) and clean install it (clean install = deletes ALL data from hard drive and installs Windows) from that (i.e. bootable USB (or DVD) which you can make using that ISO file) as it will remove any random BS they have included (you have to tell it to wipe the drive after it boots to the USB just prior to the Windows 10 installation. it's not that difficult as you just delete all partitions on there etc.). you just need to find out whether you got Windows 10 Home or Pro which you can see from that 'about' thing I mentioned above.
if your using a bootable USB option, which I assume most will in today's world, I suggest using Rufus (i.e. rufus.ie/ ), which is free like everything else I mentioned. also, there is a possibility there is 'secure boot' enabled on modern laptops etc as you may or may not have to tweak that stuff in your laptops BIOS. either way, you got to find out which key on your keyboard boots to USB devices etc. it's likely one of the F keys at the top of the keyboard, like say F8 or F9 or F10.
also, I don't like that Microsoft store BS either as I pretty much never use it and stop it from updating crap etc and I always use a offline account when first installing Windows 10.
side note: your current laptop might have a additional partition on your hard drive(or SSD) used as a restoration partition which allows you to return the laptop to a factory state. if you want to take extra steps, assuming you have some sort of decent external hard drive (or the like), you can use something like Clonezilla (which is free hard drive imaging software) to make a image of your current setup. this could be potentially useful if you use the Win10 1903 ISO (which I mentioned above) from bootable USB(or DVD) to completely wipe the hard drive and install from scratch and if for whatever reason you want to put things back to the exact state they are at the time you imaged it, before the attempted clean install using the Win10 1903 ISO stuff, you can with Clonezilla. NOTE: this Clonezilla step is probably not needed, but it's something one can consider, if you want some way to put the hard drive back to the way it was before the clean install using the ISO stuff.
bottom line... the first thing I would do if I had your laptop is wipe the hard drive and install Windows 10 1903 to it (using the method I described above) as this way you can be sure you got a good running order Windows 10 on it without any random unnecessary junk installed from the manufacturer. but as a precaution Clonezilla would give you some extra insurance in case you want to restore the hard drive to the state it is currently.
Agreed.
but that's why I tend to prefer wiping the drive and installing Windows 10 clean so you don't have any random junk on it that could interfere with things as I never seen a 'this isn't approved by the Microsoft store' happen to me when installing NVIDIA GPU drivers.

I don't have a specific link to the laptop that was bought-my brother bought it and he doesn't have it. But thanks anyway. At least I have some ideas to pursue.

Are you sure you're on the right channel on the tv?

lunda2222I doubt he messed that up since he said, "I know the HDMI cable works since I can hook it up to an old PC and it immediately gets the signal.".

Okay, thanks for the info. I asked because looking online it appears there is variations of that general model.
but come to think of it... look on the laptop itself, does it give any specific details, like the exact model of it etc?

lunda2222 I doubt he messed that up since he said, "I know the HDMI cable works since I can hook it up to an old PC and it immediately gets the signal.". Perhaps, but it's a typical mistake my father would have made. In fact he did make that mistake (and knew about HDMI cables) when I downloaded Against the Wind for my parents.
It always pays to start with the basics.

lunda2222Yeah, I got to agree here as sometimes people make very simple mistakes that are often overlooked on random things. then when they find out it was something simple, it's embarrassing. like say with a lawn mower for example... sometimes people think something is wrong with it when it simply ran out of gas.

Fixed (we think) It was because it had two graphics processors (Intel and an Nvidia GPU one). If the Nvidia is active it doesn't switch to the Intel so I have to do it manually.

Prime etc.You should be able to disable the Intel GPU as assuming your NVIDIA GPU has a HDMI output, chances are it's better than the Intel one straight up. the main thing is... use hardware acceleration when possible as it will put less load on your CPU when using the GPU for video playback (especially in HD video playback) as on my Linux Mint setup, using GPU acceleration CPU usage drops to around 5% vs around 15% without it on my i3-2120 CPU. but come to think of it... when you go to 'Device Manager' what does it show for 'Display Adapters'?p.s. I know switching audio output from PC to TV requires manual adjustment on my NVIDIA 1050 Ti 4GB GPU. it does on Windows 10 and Linux Mint v19.2-Cinnamon as when I switch it to the TV, audio only plays on the TV, if I switch it back to the PC side, audio only plays on the PC speakers.

I dont have it back yet-my brother took it with him and said he got it to work by going to the Intel icon on the system tray and open the Intel UHD graphics control panel. The display--multiple display. I will try it this weekend when I get it back.

Okay, thanks for the info. what I was asking above should pretty much confirm for me whether you got two display adapters or not and should tell me what kind of GPU's you got specifically I think. p.s. on a side note... if you never updated the graphics driver for your NVIDIA card it would generally be a good idea to do so as there has likely been security fixes over the months/years for your NVIDIA GPU. it's generally done through here... www.geforce.com/drivers ; you just select the correct options and it will give you a download link. but since you don't know the details at the moment that link will be mostly useless until you get the laptop etc.

FUCK! Well it worked--but the fucking file I tried MKV froze about 2/3rds in and I figured i had made a mistake transferring it to the portable HD--that seemed the case but when i tried rerunning it the laptop was making a lot of whirring noises and wouldnt move the file (I could play it from the start but not 2/3rds in). I used VLC.
Plus I cant use a remote control. A mouse sucks. I may have to use a wireless for this.
I really hate this. I miss the media player.

Prime etc. I suggest Pot Player x64 (i.e. www.videohelp.com/software/PotPlayer ) for general .mkv video playback. it can also use hardware assisted x264 video playback which cuts back on CPU usage. that's hands down my favorite video playback software on Windows for .mkv files etc. spacebar is pause etc. using the keyboard is not bad once you get used to general functions and you can use the left and right arrows to rewind or fast forward etc. Pot Player x64 is just more snappier than VLC as I never understood how VLC got as popular as it is. but if your file froze... can't you just reboot and transfer the file from the portable hard drive to another device? ; but if the file keeps crashing at the same point, the file itself is probably corrupt. your portable hard drive is probably fine. p.s. if your going to use VLC I would make sure your on at least v3.0.7 due to security risks... thehackernews.com/2019/06/vlc-media-player-hacking.html ; but as a general rule I would keep video playback software updated as it will help keep risks like mentioned in that article at a minimum.

It's not going to be a good long term solution to watch movies this way. I think I need to find some kind of media box again or get the unit fixed. The HD section of the media box is what is malfunctioning. Like a loose connector. If I shake it, sometimes it works fine. But I cant seem to open it-one of the screws is damaged. It has USB ports, but I cannot get the box to access the external HD which is too bad since it would save a lot of problems.

Prime etc.It seems your using something else for video playback? ; what is it? because I just use a computer with a HDMI port (from my main PC's Geforce 1050 Ti 4GB GPU) connected to TV and it works great as I just use the keyboard for general navigation. but if your a big fan of using a simple remote control, my setup might not cut it for you but I don't mind it at all as it works great. but I have used a Samsung BluRay player that plays .mkv files pretty well. although I did notice not that long ago one .mkv file I have does not work on it. but I suspect most won't have a problem. but with this setup you can use a remote control to pause/play/stop/rewind/fast-forward etc as you can play .mkv files from a USB stick although re-formatting the USB thumb drive to NTFS seems to be required as exFAT, which is what it's formatted to by default, does not work as the Samsung player does not even see the 64GB USB thumb drive. but it works fine when I format the drive to NTFS.

I was using a Vibe HDD Media Box 2.5'/3.5' but it is on the fritz. I cant access the file storage. If I can plug in a separate HD then maybe I can do that. It comes with a disk for formating but beats me where it goes-I see no disk slot on the box.

Prime etc.usb.brando.com/2-5-3-5-hdd-media-box-hdmp-358s-_p01409c046d015.html ; is that it? if so, it should not be difficult to swap hard drives if your hard drive is faulty. but I see it as Component and HDMI connectors on that. if your HDMI is shot, try the Component connection assuming your TV has a connection for Component. I also see a LAN/USB connection which might be usable. also, you said the screw is striped? ; there might be ways to fix it. but if it's not really messed up I would imagine with a proper fit screw driver should be able to remove it. but assuming you get this sorted, I would not tighten it much when putting it back in. if possible, maybe even leave the screw out of there and just be careful with the unit.
