I haven't seen enough of Hidden Fortress to include it, but the day many come when it will take the place of one of these. Another great year from the best days of film making. A supreme year for Westerns, maybe the best year for Westerns overall.

 Your "like" to my ballot championing this neglected last gasp of the noir cycle prompted me to give it another go last night and yes - should probably bump it up a few places. If there were an Oscar for "most eye popping visuals" of the year then PARTY GIRL would have cleaned up. My retina still haven't fully recovered. Taylor unusually strong too - and Cyd well cast. It was a hit ($4m profit at today's prices) but bigger abroad than in USA - the French new wave of course adoring it..... but seems to deserve to be better known/appreciated today... Imdb trivia soberly notes Cyd's torrid dance routines were "not typical" of 1930s setting
