When I was younger I was told not to wear headphones all the time, especially while driving, because you may miss out on someone calling to you for any number of reasons. Nowadays they celebrate that you can block the whole world out and just listen to your music. Sure it's great for the listener, until they get hit by a car that they weren't aware was heading right toward them or are still browsing in a store shopping long after the employees made last call.

At first when I read the topic I thought it was something in relation to 'Are noise-cancelling headphones bad for your hearing?' sort of thing.
but after reading your post... I can see how headphones can be bad in these situations to, like you mentioned. but it would seem obvious if someone is going to block out THAT much of their surroundings, it should be common sense not to use those types of headphones in situations you need to aware of stuff outside of the headphones. anyone who wears headphones while driving is just stupid and should not be driving. but I suspect these types are that type of person who texts while driving which is even stupider as that's WAY to high of a risk to text while driving. if someone needs to text, don't do it while driving as it's common sense your focus on the road while drop significantly as I am not even a fan of people talking on cell phones while driving but at least they can still keep their eyes on the road even though their attention is probably so-so on the road. but with text, your attention is pretty much all on the phone.
p.s. for the record... I always prefer actual headphones over those ear-bud types as I don't like those kind and always use over-the-head kinds of headphones.
