I was sitting down with my dad last week and prompted by the show on tv I said 'you seem like the kind of person who would know someone who has been murdered'. He said 'I do and I know who did it'. That's where I learned about a very sad double murder in Sydney, Australia.
He then recounted his friend from Sydney, Australia in the 80s - Valerie. She died long before I was born. He couldn't quite remember her last name, 'I am sure it starts with H .... Hart? Howard?' The internet confirmed her name was Valerie Howell and she was 41 when she disappeared. She was last seen on July the third, 1991, having returned to the home of a Mr Michael Cook to collect some clothes she'd purchased. Her car was found doused in petrol but not set alight 10 days later. She was never seen again and her body has never been found.
Michael Cook's girlfriend, 30 year old Karen Gilbody, seemingly disappeared into thin air at the same time. There were rumors she planned to leave him. He never reported her missing and told people she had gone on holiday. Her body has also never been found. Mr Cook is obviously a person of significant interest in both of these cases but there has never been sufficient evidence to charge him.
Information from my father says that Michael was known as 'Red' at that time. He was a member of the gang Highway 61 and deeply involved in illegal drugs. Many years earlier Valerie was a small-time drug dealer, had gone into a deal with Michael and gotten them ripped off somewhere around the figure of $20,000. He said 'he was patient but he got his back eventually.' People have been terrorized by this gang regarding this case.
It is a terrible shame that these women are lost to their family and friends and all but forgotten by the general public. My father isn't the only one who knows who did it, everybody does, he's just sheltered by a lack of evidence and strong, intimidating gang connections.
