Beautiful documentary following the rise, fall and redemption of possibly the most “underrated” pop songwriter of the post-punk era. Indie pop band The Chills are New Zealand’s greatest export (yep even better than LotR), but they’ve had a checkered history beset by tragedy, bad luck and an industry seemingly indifferent to their brand of charming melancholia. Led by singer/guitarist/songwriter and sole remaining original member Phillipps’ whose recollections are juxtaposed against those from many of the 30 plus musicians who have passed through the ranks. Revelations of the inevitable drug problem that almost took his life, (but not in the usual way) are balanced with lighter moments showing him (literally) taking stock by sorting through the mountains of paraphernalia and collectibles that engulf his home. In many ways a very typical story, but told with heart and insight, recommended for fans of the band ( cryptoflovecraft ) and anyone interested in “artist” documentaries.
