Wrath of Khan or Return of the Jedi? Which is better and why? Both are great films, and I own both on DVD. However, Wrath of Khan is superior IMO. Khan is widely considered one of the best, if not the best, of the "Star Trek: TOS" films, while ROTJ is widely considered the weakest of the original Star Wars trilogy. As for why, I think it comes down to writing mostly.

I can see why people would say Khan is better, but in the end, I have to pick Jedi.

ROTJ.
Star Trek 2 isn't that good in the first place. Ricardo Montalban was just a good villain

Return of the Jedi
Because of the characters and the world it takes place in and because it brings the OT to a satisfying conclusion. I am emotionally invested in these characters, whereas with The Wrath of Khan I am not.
The art direction, the creatures, the action scenes, the effects etc. all of that stuff is top notch and so much fun.

The Wrath of Khan.
I'm a huge Trekkie and The Wrath of Khan is the best of the TOS era movies. It's so well directed, the story is great, the acting is top notch (including from William Shatner) and it's a very elegant sci-fi film overall. I also favour James Horner's soundtrack. Sorry, John Williams.
Return of the Jedi is also really good, but it's ultimately (deservedly) overshadowed by The Empire Strikes Back.

Wrath of Khan, because in my opinion it's not just a great Star Trek movie, or a great installment, it is a great movie. Its full of interesting and funny characters who add key ingredients to the thematic mix of the movie, it's directed and edited to move at a brisk pace, the costume designs are iconic, the action scenes are thrilling while being so minimalist. The movie also has universal appeal. You don't need to like Star Trek, you don't need to have watched a single episode or movie to understand it and like it. It's an easy 9 or even 10 out of 10.

I think that Ricardo Montalban should have gotten a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award Nomination for His Performance in "THE WRATH OF KHAN".

Wrath of Khan largely because it didn't have teddy bears fighting the bad guys. But all-in-all, Jedi just seemed a bit lazy across the board...lazy score from Williams, lazy performance by Ford, lazy story (we already did the Death Star thing).
