Shelley Long
(pictured with Tom Hanks)
Shelley Long was a comedy icon back in the 1980s, brilliant in the sitcom 'Cheers'. If you were around back then, you'll probably remember her standing in the entertainment world.
She's had to deal with occasional violent episodes in her life. She's also battled depression, survived a suicide attempt and witnessed more mental carnage than is necessary.
She's originally from Fort Wayne, Indiana, home to one of cinema's most influential screwball comediennes, Carole Lombard. Actress Julia Barr is also from Fort Wayne and she's the same age as Long (both were born in 1949); they both attended the same school (South Side High School) too.
I'd like to recommend some movies from back when Long was widely acknowledged to be one of the comedy genre's shining lights.
With Dennis Quaid & ex-Beatle Ringo Starr in 'Caveman' (1981)
On location for 'Night Shift' (1982) with director Ron Howard, Henry Winkler & Michael Keaton
With Tom Cruise, filmmaker John Stockwell & John Navin in 'Losin' It' (1983)
Tug-of-war for suicidal Drew Barrymore with deranged patient Ryan O'Neal in 'Irreconcilable Differences' (1984)
With Austin Pendleton & Judith Ivey in 'Hello Again' (1987)
With Bette Midler in 'Outrageous Fortune' (1987)
Cult item 'Troop Beverly Hills' (1989) has inspired a generation

I watched The Money Pit about a year ago. Very funny film.
I think she was particularly outstanding in the early years of Cheers. Several scenes between her and Sam are amazing.
I did enjoy her in the two Brady Bunch films as the constantly cheerful mom.
I haven't seen her in the other films, though.

She has always taken flack for leaving "Cheers". I found her character annoying on Cheers and was glad to see her go. And then I missed her. I guess some characters you just love to hate.
Diane : Sam, may I have a brief word with you?
Sam : I suppose you could, but I doubt it.

I've a take on her time & departure from Cheers imdb2.freeforums.net/thread/490/cheersLong story short, neither Dianne nor Sam were programed for devoted relationship - they were each destined to never feel content with a single partner. Which also allows my canon belief that old Sam & old Dianne eventually did common law couple up, & lived happily (& happily unhappily*) together til' death. As for Long, she probably could've seen better projects had she left 2-3 seasons earlier. As it was, I've never envisioned roles she was better suited for than anyone else - she didn't miss the boat on anything, she was merely in the wrong decade & the wrong times.
