Anyone here enjoy the Hammer Films horror pictures? They're some of my favorite horror movies.

Love them. Big fan of the "Dracula" films. Christopher Lee is great. Own them on DVD. "The Mummy" films are cool too. Hammer films have great atmosphere.

Hammer horror is terrific. They always have great period recreation and atmosphere, and feature some sterling British character actors.

I grew up on Hammer. One of the first movies I ever saw at a movie theater--when I was 7--was The Brides of Dracula! Hammer had everything: great acting, great sets, awesome music, bodacious babes, and plenty of blood. I also liked their non-traditional horrors, like Die, Die, My Darling and The Nanny!

Love em! Well, the good ones, at least. Hammer made a fair amount of dross as well, but when they were on form they were unbeatable in the field of gothic horror.
My favourites (in release order):
The Hound of the Baskervilles The Mummy The Brides of Dracula The Nanny Dracula, Prince of Darkness Dracula Has Risen From the Grave Frankenstein Created Woman
Still badly need to see The Plague of the Zombies

By then, at least for me, Hammer had lost a lot of its classic sheen. I'd also put the Gorgon on your list. It works as a great supernatural thriller, full of mystery and suspense, until the very, very end. What do you think of Die, Die, My Darling, with Tallulah Bankhead? That's one of my favorite Hammers. I also enjoyed The Witches (aka The Devil's Own in the US).

I have to say my favorite Hammer film is Curse of the Werewolf. Quite underrated. You rarely see it or hear of it.

For me, Taste the Blood of Dracula (1970) was when the sheen wore off, but I definitely agree with you that the sheen did wear off eventually. Wasn't much of a fan of The Gorgon to be honest and haven't yet seen the others you mentioned. They don't all appear to be that readily available on DVD unfortunately.

Where are you located? Die, Die, My Darling has been on VHS and DVD for years, from Columbia. The Witches was released on DVD in the late 90s, from Anchor Bay (no longer available and quite expensive). Funny you should mention Taste the Blood of Dracula, because I have a particular liking for that film. Hated Dracula 1972 AD!

I love Hammer horror. Lee and Cushing are true legends.
My problem, I saw most of these films some years ago on TV, and I understand they were edited a lot.

I like Hammer films, but I do have to be in a certain frame of mind to make it through one without playing on the Internet. They are a bit slow.
The music for Hammer films is great. Very brassy!

Well I guess I'm in the minority not being a fan of Hammer horror. As Flynn pointed out they are rather slow and it seems I don't have that much patience any more (except for silents). However I saw The Devil Rides Out (1968) today and that one I really liked.

However I saw The Devil Rides Out (1968) today and that one I really liked. I got a hold of the region 2 version of The Ultimate Hammer Collection, for a very neat price, some years ago and I really wanted to like every single one of the films included, but many of them felt just too slow paced and I ended up fighting to stay awake and be interested in what went on. Beautiful women, great music and atmosphere, but beside the Frankenstein and the Dracula titles, I was not too impressed by the "ultimate" collection that featured in the 21 DVD boxset. There were also some of the titles who was more of a dark comedy or psychological thrillers than being the usual classic horror films, but that did not mean they were bad, as I thought stuff like The Nanny was a very positive surprise.

Sorry for my late answer, haven't been checking out these boards for weeks (not much too my interest any more and lack the inspiration to start something myself). Didn't know The Nanny was Hammer. It totally doesn't feel like Hammer. I own it and love it. Haven't seen any of the Dracula movies but some Frankenstein movies, still unimpressed. Besides I got tired of seeing Cushing and Lee over and over again. Good actors but they don't have the same impact on me like Lugosi, Karloff, Price and even Bette Davis have.

Hammer is a mixed bag. You need to be a little patient with some of the more talkative ones. A lot of the Hammer Dracula films are really boring.
Peter Cushing is my fave. The Frankenstein series is solid, but my favorite Hammer films in general are: The Evil of Frankenstein, Paranoiac, and Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter.

Evil of Frankenstein is universally recognized as the worst Hammer Frankenstein in the series. And you think it's "solid?" Come on.
