Surrealistic Pillow is my favorite - and one of my favorite rock albums. The tracks go from sunshine pop (How Do You Feel) to psychedelia (White Rabbit). The band later became ridiculously political.

I remember the schism growing up where some psych fans felt the Grateful Dead avoided getting too political like the Airplane, but others felt the politics was there in the songwriting, just more subtle perhaps. Two colossal Californian bands when you think of the entire discographies produced by the various members of the two rosters.

The Coen used a few tracks from Surrealistic Pillow in A Serious Man, which is set in 1967. My sister bought a watercolor from Grace Slick, who was kind enough to send her a thank you note.

Yes, it's mentioned in the film. The cryptical ending refers to an actual tornado that hit the Twin Cities back then.
