I love The Beach Boys and Pet Sounds, but given it’s such a grand and opulent album I sometimes wonder if it may have benefited from a more restrained instrumental/orchestral intro/opener. “Wouldn’t it Be Nice” is of course wonderful, but opening with something this overt and upbeat feels a little rushed.

I come from the opposite view. Too lo-fi and I pass out. 'Wouldn't It Be Nice' peppers the stew to create a delicious opening spoonful. A lovin' spoonful in the California sunshine, if you willl.

Fair enough, whatever works for you.

Did Bryter Layter inspire this post?

Did Bryter Layter inspire this post? I watched Love & Mercy and gave it a listen for the first time in years. I do like Bryter Layter.

I bought Pet Sounds today funny enough.
I heard it aeons ago and was never bowled over....preferring the stuff from Surf's Up......but have always had a mind to re-listen with older ears as it's like a sorta Citizen Kane.....always in most top tens..... AND I gather it's one of Paul McCartney's fave albums AND It was only 5Op in a charity shop.
I still prefer Bowie's cover of God Only Knows though.

IMO comes closer than any other similarly lionised album to matching that hype. That being said I probably prefer Surf's Up also. Or Holland. Love the whole run from Pet Sounds to Holland actually.
