After Kurim Case I decided yet again to put together another case from our crime history which makes me nauseous but because it has never been solved and there is a small to zero chance it’s going to be ever solved, I think it belongs here. It’s not very much known outside of the country so you might be interested in reading about it. And English is my third language so please don’t kill me.
Story
Two young women 21 and 22 years old were both young and attractive. Dita Hrabankova and Kamila Fajtova didn’t know each other but both were targeted by brutal murderer. Even after 25+ years this crime is still baffling crime investigators.
“She said charming young tall blond man approached her in the bus while travelling home. They didn’t have much time then, so they agreed on date for the next day. She promised to be back within 2 hours. It was the last time I’ve seen her” – that’s how mother of Dita Hrabankova remembers the last moments with her 21-year-old daughter on May 27, 1992.
Two weeks later her body was found close to botanical gardens in location called Pruhonice approximately 15 km from Prague city center, in wooded area. It was one of the most atrocious case in history of crime in Czech Republic.
According her friends Dita was thoughtful and responsible person. After she graduated from high school, she worked for the construction company. She dreamed about continuing her studies on University but was short of cash, so she planned to make some money as an Au-Pair in Italy. She also studied English and Italian.
On May 27 in the afternoon Dita travelled by bus Nr. 136 towards the factory Koh-I-Nor in Prague-Vrsovice – popular neighborhood not far from city center. She was supposed to meet young man from bus at 5 p.m, who introduced himself as Marek.
Whether the murder occurred in wooded area in Pruhonice or she was transported there, wasn’t clear to investigators. Professor Dr. Jiri Stefan from Forensic Medicine Institute in Prague vividly remembers the case: “It captured our attention mainly because of the way how the body was open, and all organs were removed. It was professional work the same as you perform during the autopsy”.
Detectives interrogated over 2 000 people included pathologists, hospital attendants, vets etc. To no avail. Rumors became spread that there are operating certain groups trafficking with human organs, media were chasing one sensational news after another and claiming this is the first case of this sort in our country. Unfortunately, it wasn’t truth. Only five months ago similar murder happened 400 km from Prague.
Calling for help. Then silence.
Kamila was divorced mother of 3 years old son and working as waitress. On December 11, 1991 Kamila Fajtova spent her time with friends and her boyfriend in restaurant in Ostrava city center approximately 400 km from Prague where above murder has occurred. She left with her boyfriend shortly before midnight and took a public transport to get home. Shortly before her home station they’ve got into argument and boyfriend exited bus 3 stations before her and it was the last time he’d ever seen her.
There were around six people in the bus but investigators managed to find only two of them, but they weren’t much of help. Kamila left the bus and headed home which was only few hundred meters from the bus stop. Investigators believe predator has already followed her. Few witnesses confirmed they heard argument of two people, signs of physical struggle and woman screaming from nearby wooded area where perpetrator most probably pulled unfortunate woman.
Despite this area is quite populated she had never had got the help while screaming and fighting for her life. Very telling is one ignorant witness’s statement during the investigation: “Around 1 a.m. I heard woman calling for help. I went to balcony, but it was dark foggy night, so I didn’t see anything. I heard her calling few more times and then silence. So, I went back to sleep”.
This picture may be disturbing for some: Her body was found after 18 days by man walking his dog. According medics her body was devastated. Some organs were missing. Someone removed her both breasts together with breastbone and part of her ribs and cut both of her hands in wrist area using very sharp tool. Chief of Institute of Forensic Medicine in Ostrava said: “There was obvious sexual manipulation with the body, even though the sperm was found on her cloth, DNA analysis wasn’t a thing in that time”.
One or two murderers?
There is 5 months gap between both crimes. In both cases the perpetrator must have been the person familiar with human anatomy. Investigators started analyzing similar and dissimilar sings in both cases. Comparing two autopsies the similarities were: ribs were separated from sternum in place where cartilage is, chest and abdominal cavity was open, sharp tool was used in both cases, behavior and number of wounds have characteristics of sadistic behavior.
But despite of all the investigation hit the dead end. They tried to create psychological profile of perpetrator. They knew he is extremely dangerous person who needs urgent sexological cure, eventually castration. Kamila’s boyfriend was a suspect at first but after providing alibi he was cleared.
Suspect Surgeon
Detectives interrogated tens of suspects and one of them stood out. Their attention caught man Petr Š.(1964-98), known in criminal spheres by nickname Surgeon. I couldn’t find though why this nickname was given to him. Three years before Kamila’s murder he attacked another young girl from behind and tried to strangle her to death but she was lucky to escape. Crime occurred in the same area where Kamila died three years later. He had three criminal records and all of them for sexual aggression. He was heavy alcohol and drug abuser.
Surgeon was obsessed with chemistry and another sciences medicine included. In the past he studied chemistry either. He was known to police as shady opiates manufacturer. Surgeon repeatedly denied accusation and claimed he was in Germany during the time murder occurred. But during the polygraph interrogation it came out he was exactly in the area where Kamila has died.
Here’s what’s written in interrogation file according one source: “Suspect knows the circumstances and events of the crime only perpetrator may know. This conclusion however can only be used for further operational processing and as a standalone conclusion cannot lead and serve as an evidence to charge the suspect for this crime”. Also, Surgeon’s wife confirmed he knew Kamila and confessed about his rough sexual deviations she experienced by herself. Nonetheless none of above was enough to convict him for Kamila’s murder, let alone connect him to the murder of Dita Hrabankova despite Surgeon was young, tall and blond young man who often travelled to Prague.
Profile of perpetrator also suggests he is probably in very good shape and strong man, which fits to Surgeon as he was regular in fitness centers. Later when investigators found another lead (but nowhere specified) and wanted to interrogate the guy again, they found out he has died under mysterious circumstances and took his secret with himself. One of the sources claims it was suicide. It was in 1998. But similar case has never happened since.
Trafficking with organs
Some investigators refuse to connect these two cases. They admit the case of Dita Hrabankova killed in Prague, might have been murdered for organ trafficking the second could have been a work of psychopathic deviant. As we mentioned earlier, she wanted to find job in Italy. She first went on her own then came back and wanted to go back to Italy again. She has visited one agency in Prague arranging working abroad. She wasn’t successful but what distracted investigators was she had to complete very thorough and detailed questionnaire asking about blood type and requiring HIV and other medical tests. It wasn’t usual for these types of agencies.
Investigators admitted her organs could have been used for commercial purposes but Medical Center for Transplantation refused the idea. They claim such an operation requires sterile surroundings, professional tools and personnel. But investigators argued she could have been killed elsewhere, not in the woods where she had been discovered.
Another suspect in 2000
In 2000 investigators worked on murder of another man Zdenek Teplo. He was murdered by a gang of people who stole his car but he was also suspect in case of another murder of young women in 1994. He was known sexual deviant who sexually harassed women and secretly filmed them on camera. He was lurking around single women and falsely promising the work as model abroad. He faced some charges similar to kidnapping and rape attempt in the past. When detectives searched his house they found notebook with tons of telephone numbers and one of them belonged to Dita Hrabankova. But that was end of it and investigators hit the dead end again.
I am missing a lot information in these two cases. I never found picture of Surgeon and his full name or relatives, where is he from etc. Maybe it is somewhere but I couldn’t find it. Also there is not mentioned any cause of death which I find as an important fact for interrogation. At least it’s not published. I don’t think organs were removed while girls were alive though. I also hope. I think it’s interesting coincidence that last suspect Zdenek Teplo lurked woman to his house by promising the work abroad while it was exactly what Dita Hrabankova was looking for. But would be such a person able to perform such a professional work as precise organ removal? Specialists were clear it wasn’t amateurish work. Below some links in Czech but you may google translate it.
